One thing became immediately clear from this month's organizing poll:
while there are countless organizing products on the market, most
people don't rely on fancy gadgets or expensive systems. Instead,
they depend on a handful of simple, practical organizing tools that
quietly make everyday life easier.
The clear favorite was file folders, earning 23% of the vote. In an
increasingly digital world, it's interesting that old-fashioned paper
organization still reigns supreme. Bills, warranties, tax records,
medical paperwork, recipes, instruction manuals...paper has a way of
finding us no matter how much technology advances. A good filing
system provides peace of mind because important documents are
easy to find exactly when they're needed.
Coming in second were plastic bins with 17% of the vote. It's easy to
see why they're so popular. Plastic bins are incredibly versatile,
working just as well in pantries and closets as they do in garages,
basements, and craft rooms. They make it simple to group similar
items together, protect belongings from dust, and create tidy spaces
that are easy to maintain.
The remaining results reveal something even more interesting. There
wasn't one "perfect" organizing tool that everyone agreed on. Instead,
readers chose the items that solve their particular challenges.
Some people rely on sticky notes to capture reminders before they
disappear. Others can't imagine life without hooks, making use of
empty wall space to keep frequently used items within easy reach.
Labels help create systems the whole family can follow, while baskets,
drawer dividers, and shelving each earned loyal followings for giving
everyday belongings a proper home.
Perhaps one of the most telling results was that 7% of readers said
they mostly organize without special tools at all. That's an important
reminder that successful organizing isn't about buying more products.
The best organizing system is simply one that works for your lifestyle,
whether it involves color-coded containers or nothing more than
deciding where things belong.
The responses in the "Other" category reinforced that idea beautifully.
Readers mentioned planners, paper calendars, notebooks,
whiteboards, phones, cleaning cloths, donation boxes, and even
colored pens. None of these items were designed to organize an
entire house, yet each one helps its owner stay on top of daily life in a
meaningful way.
If there's one lesson from this poll, it's that organizing tools aren't
magical. A plastic bin won't create organization by itself, and neither
will the prettiest label maker. The real magic comes from using
whatever tools fit your habits, simplify your routines, and make it
easier to put things away and find them again later.
Here are a bunch of personal GON Reader comments…
•
Alphabetical and numerical sorters to organize pending projects
and paperwork
•
Still trying to find my ‘system’
•
Organizing lists
•
File folders, some with pockets, some without. I store them
horizontally and vertically and label accordingly, depending on
where I put them
•
Cleaning cloths
•
Paper calendar
•
Daily TO DO list
•
Phone. Camera, note, lists and calendar always in my pocket
•
Lists. TO DO lists (for the next week or so). A4 white board for
todays must do's, (appt's, bills etc.) Paper diaries (essential for
me). They are my baseline, others on the list then follow
accordingly
•
I use ALL of these and cannot imagine my life without them! Each
one has its own special job to do
•
Colored pens and lots of paper
•
I use plastic shoe boxes in the pantry and plastic white
bins/baskets that have holes on the sides for my closet and
pantry. Shelves. My husband put in both places tracks so I can
adjust the shelves to any height. I label the white baskets and the
shoe boxes can be seen through, but I still label so family and
visitors know where to retrieve or put back items
•
Planner
•
Calendars! Master on wall, duplicate pocket calendar in purse.
Keeps me on target time- and task-wise
•
Boxes to use for donations
•
My paper planner. It’s like my diary. It contains what I have done
and what’s in my future. The other thing would be file folders
•
My daily TO DO list in a small notebook always written in pencil
•
I use all the above tools, but it is my steno pad notebook that
keeps me sane. I have a simple spreadsheet there of months
going across and bills down. Each square gets the paid date. I
also keep notes from healthcare calls and financial planner.
Grocery lists are on the phone notes app. It's being able to see at
a glance when a bill was paid without opening the computer that
makes it work for me
•
I use whatever I have around
