enjoy the most?

Organizing Habits Survey: Readers Share Their Most Enjoyable Decluttering and Organization Tasks Poll Results 32% Making lists and plans 18% Decluttering drawers or closets 12% Rearranging and decorating 11% I don’t enjoy any of it! I just like the results! 9% Labeling or sorting items 6% Cleaning and freshening up a room 5% Other 4% Sorting through photos and other memories 3% Digital decluttering (emails, photos, files, apps) When I asked readers which organizing task they secretly enjoy the most, one answer stood well above the rest. Nearly one-third of respondents (32%) chose making lists and plans, proving that for many people, organizing starts with pencil and paper long before a single drawer is emptied. Whether it's a daily to-do list, a room-by- room decluttering plan, or simply writing down ideas, there's something satisfying about having a roadmap. Coming in second was decluttering drawers or closets (18%). It's easy to understand why. Opening a messy drawer and closing it neatly organized just a few minutes later provides almost instant gratification. Several readers mentioned how rewarding it feels to let go of things they no longer need and create a little breathing room. Rearranging and decorating received 12% of the vote. Sometimes organizing isn't really about getting rid of anything at all. Instead, it's about making a room feel fresh again. Moving furniture, displaying favorite decorations, or simply finding a better home for everyday items can make an entire space feel new without spending a dime. One response that probably made many readers smile was "I don't enjoy any of it! I just like the results!" That finished with 11% of the vote. Let's be honest…not everyone finds organizing enjoyable…and that’s OK. For many people, the reward isn't the process. It's walking into a room afterward and thinking, "Ahh...that's so much better." Several of the reader comments showed that organizing often goes hand in hand with other enjoyable routines. One reader loves decorating for every holiday because it gives them the perfect excuse to deep clean the house. Another enjoys tidying up every evening so they can wake up to a neat home each morning. Someone else admitted to loving laundry because every load has a clear beginning, middle, and end. Those comments remind us that organizing isn't always about closets and storage bins. Sometimes it's simply about creating a home that feels peaceful. Readers who enjoy labeling and sorting (9%) appreciate creating systems that make life easier. Once everything has a designated place, it's much easier to keep it organized. Others enjoy cleaning and freshening up a room (6%), finding satisfaction in making a space sparkle after everything has been put away. The "Other" category (5%) included some wonderfully unique answers, from balancing bank statements to shredding old papers. Several readers even said they enjoy almost every organizing task because they love bringing order out of chaos. While sorting through old photographs and memories (4%) wasn't one of the top choices, those who selected it described it as a meaningful experience. Organizing treasured memories may take longer than cleaning a drawer, but it comes with its own special rewards. Finally, only 3% chose digital decluttering, suggesting that organizing emails, computer files, and photos isn't nearly as much fun as organizing physical spaces. Yet almost everyone who tackles digital clutter agrees it feels wonderful once it's finished. Perhaps the most interesting takeaway from this poll is that there's no single organizing task everyone enjoys. Some people love planning. Others love purging. Some enjoy decorating, while others simply love seeing the finished results. Whatever task makes you want to get started is probably the perfect place to begin, because enjoying even one part of organizing often creates the momentum to keep going. Here are a bunch of personal GON Reader comments… Making lists and plans..the funny thing is though…I don't like to go back and look at my lists. Tidying up before l go to bed so everything looks shipshape first thing in the morning. I just couldn't pick one over the other. It is so rewarding to declutter but it's satisfying to look at what you've rearranged made more functional and beautiful. I love throwing stuff away and shredding papers that are no longer needed! Strangely, I enjoy laundry. It's satisfying to sort, wash, dry, fold and put away loads. The chore has a definite start and end. I even clean my washing machine once a month! Balancing my bank statement. I used to enjoy decluttering. Now with some medical issues, it is just a bit harder to do. I love to decorate for every holiday. That is when I do my heavy cleaning at the same time. I have always planned my day in writing every morning. My to-do list. I plan everything. I get satisfaction from all of them. Like organizing drawers, especially in home office, because I like bringing order out of chaos. Back to Web Poll Results Index
