The Most Common Motivating Times to Organize, According to GON Readers When it comes to home organization, motivation often strikes at very different times of the day. In a recent GON reader poll, responses ranged from early morning with coffee in hand to spur-of-the-moment bursts of energy whenever clutter becomes overwhelming. These insights reveal just how personal and powerful our organizing habits can be. Many readers find their momentum in the morning hours, using that fresh energy to declutter, clean, and put systems in place before the day begins. Others prefer the quiet evening hours, when the house is calm and distractions are minimal. Still others say their organizing motivation doesn’t follow a schedule at all…it arrives unexpectedly, triggered by a messy room, an untidy closet, or even the inspiration of a favorite organizing show. What stands out most is that motivation to organize is deeply individual. Some people rely on structure, scheduling organization sessions on their calendar as they would any other appointment. Others lean into inspiration, like reacting when digital clutter piles up, a neglected space keeps gnawing at them, or they simply feel ready to reset their environment. The important lesson is this: there’s no single “right time” to organize. Whether your motivation hits at sunrise, late at night, or only when a mess reaches the breaking point, your timing is valid. Recognizing your own organizing rhythm and working with it can help you make steady progress and maintain a clutter-free home. And as our reader poll showed, you’re never alone. Others share those same moments of energy, struggle, and success.. Here are all the results in order, followed by some favorite reader comments: 31% Whenever the mood strikes 19% Early morning with coffee in hand 14% Midday when the energy hits 9% When the mess has become ridiculous 9% Other 7% I’m always motivated to organize 5% Evening when the house is quiet 4% Late afternoon as a reset 2% I’m never motivated to organize Personal GON reader comments: I schedule it in my calendar as an appointment and do it then. Otherwise, I would never do it. Seasonal purge during cleaning and rearranging I see the mess and I'm motivated Mid morning, after breakfast Once I have psyched myself up by watching YouTube videos I enjoy tackling something each day. Many times, I get an idea from Get Organized Now! So thank you very much! When there is a crisis, like too many pictures, etc. and my email is threatened to shut off! Yikes... When an area just gnaws at me for cleaning and organizing, I get at at! Sometimes it’s a closet and sometimes my craft room. After an episode of Hoarders…gets me motivated! I am at my best during the morning hours. I’m more productive at work and at home and faster and more organized at completing errands in town I'm especially motivated to organize on a sunny, cool day Seasonal changes inspire me and when life throws a curveball to add super-stress. I tend to go into purge and clean mode as therapy or as a way to control at least my surroundings (I realize it's a reaction but at least positive…not binge eating, shopping or drinking so…) It always hits me before vacation, but I have no explanation for that!  After I have visited my mom (hoarder house) When I have enough time to work on/complete a particular project, in additional to usual maintenance tasks. It's usually later in the day when I do my best organizing Late morning on week-ends Organizing has always been a fun game for me! Back to Web Poll Results Index
