The Spaces People Fear Organizing the Most
When we asked GON readers which area of their home feels the most
intimidating to organize, the answers told a fascinating story, one filled
with overflowing garages, endless paper piles, and digital clutter that’s
every bit as daunting as the physical kind.
The garage was the top response, and for good reason. Readers said
it’s where everything gets dumped…tools, boxes, holiday decor, and
odds and ends that don’t belong anywhere else. One reader described
it as “a daily challenge,” while another admitted she can only handle
short bursts of cleaning before feeling overwhelmed.
Many readers pointed to everyday spaces like kitchen counters and
dining room tables, not because they’re spooky, but because they never
stay clear. “My family constantly puts all sorts of random objects on
them,” one person wrote…a feeling many can relate to.
Others confessed that clutter doesn’t stop at the physical. Digital clutter
(on computers, phones, and tablets) earned plenty of mentions.
Readers said those endless files, photos, and emails can feel just as
heavy as boxes in the basement.
And speaking of basements and attics, those spaces drew plenty of
comments too. Some said they fear the cobwebs, while others dread
the logistics. “Too difficult to haul stuff back up the pull-down ladder,”
one reader said, while another joked that her attic is “scary because I
could fall through the hatch!”
Creative rooms also came up often. Craft rooms, studios, and hobby
spaces are beloved but often overwhelming. One reader described a
studio filled with painting, sewing, sculpting, and stained glass
projects…a joyful mix of inspiration and unfinished ideas.
A few readers mentioned their paperwork fears, particularly financial or
legal documents, worried about tossing something that might be
needed later. One person shared how her mother once had to dig
through old boxes to find proof of a paid-off loan before selling her
house.
Taken together, these stories reveal that organizing fears aren’t just
about stuff. They’re about decision-making, emotions, and the
memories tied to what we keep. But there’s good news: many readers
said they’re tackling their “scary spots” bit by bit, celebrating progress
instead of perfection. And that’s the best way to make even the most
intimidating space feel a little less haunting.

Personal GON reader comments:
•
Sewing room!
•
The attic was easier (one and done) too difficult to haul stuff back
up on the pull-down ladder. The garage is a daily challenge
•
Dining room table
•
Kitchen counters. My family constantly puts all sorts of random
objects on them
•
My craft/extra bedroom/storage room. It’s one room, I have no
closets in my house, walls are cinder blocks, room becomes a
dumping place. I can find things, but need an organizational
system I haven’t found yet
•
The home office I share with my husband. He is a spreader-type, I
like things contained, and so it's a mess to the eye but functional
nonetheless
•
Have checked off the 3 most umbriferous areas in my home!!! But
I'm working on them, thanks to your wonderful hints
•
My studio. I paint, I sculpt, knit, crochet ,sew, design costumes,
work with stained glass, do many forms of embroidery, marbleize
paper and fabric, do beading, macramé, refinish and repair
furniture, make baskets, cane chairs, dabble with fimo and resin,
and play with many other media
•
The pantry/utility room where many things hide
•
A toss up of digital land and my spare room which houses my
office/paper work, crafts and books!
•
My craft room, where I haven't done any crafting in years and the
room has become a catch all for everything!
•
My husband's den which I call the Black Hole!
•
Spare bedroom
•
Garage, parts of basement, and the kitchen counter!
•
Utility/Craft room
•
My craft room/office. The office part isn't bad, but the craft area
always needs help
•
My husband's personal room
•
Crawlspace
•
Pretty much 3 rooms equally. Was two, but trying to sort, the spare
got lumped with dump. I look in, I feel overwhelm, I walk away.
Working hard on the five things a day. Slow but progress
•
Bedroom
•
Son's bedroom (arrrrgh!!!) and husband's room
•
I chose the basement, but for the reason listed with the garage.
That’s where everything gets dumped and has been for years
•
Attic is scary because must be accessed via a pull-down staircase.
Up there, it would be easy to fall through the hatch
•
The garage and my computer are tied for the worst areas for me to
organize
•
Financial and legal documents, I fear throwing out something that
maybe needed someday. But I don't like all of the paperwork. My
Mom needed proof of a loan being paid off (the house was
collateral for the loan) or she couldn't have sold her house. She did
find it buried in a box eventually.
