The Most Frustrating Clutter Zones, According to GON Readers
When it comes to clutter, we all have that one spot in the house that
drives us a little nuts. GON readers recently weighed in on the most
frustrating clutter zones…and the answers hit home. While each home
has its own unique trouble areas, a few common culprits kept showing
up again and again.
Paper clutter topped the list, and it’s no surprise. Mail, receipts, sticky
notes, flyers…they add up fast, especially if you don’t have a clear
system for sorting or discarding them daily. Just one day of “I’ll get to it
later” can turn into a week of paper piles teetering on every surface.
The kitchen counter and dining room table were close behind. These
flat, open spaces tend to attract everything: backpacks, keys,
yesterday’s shopping bag, unfinished projects, and yes, more paper.
And once one item lands there, it’s like a magnet for the rest.
Then there are the hidden spots that frustrate us quietly: closet floors
littered with shoes, garages and basements packed with who-knows-
what, or the cabinet that you open at your own risk.
The good news? Recognizing your most frustrating clutter zone is the
first step to conquering it. Whether it’s carving out five minutes a day to
sort paper, creating designated landing zones near entryways, or doing
a once-a-month sweep of the garage, basement, or closet floor, small
efforts can make a big difference.
And remember…you’re not alone. Nearly everyone has that one space
they avoid, but a little focused attention can bring relief, order, and
breathing room back into your home.

Personal GON reader comments:
•
Our basement that has become the dumping ground for everything
not being used, totally disorganized with boxes and stuff
everywhere
•
I feel like I keep moving the piles from one place to another, but
never really solve the problem, no matter which "system" I have
tried
•
The whole closet
•
The basement has become the dumping ground
•
Pretty much, the whole house! I am (gradually) clearing the clutter.
Yes, the set of cutlery/cooking utensils/freezer bags etc. drawers…
they have been done, and it is a pleasure to just open the drawer
and grab what I want and not dig through "stuff". "Stuff" that
survived the bin/recycle is currently waiting for op-shop
•
The garage, but the kitchen counter is close behind
•
My husband’s table next to his chair. I’ve tried everything, but he
still refuses to put his things away
•
Anything that is considered my husband’s area. He tends to live in
piles and not put things where they belong. Drives me absolute
crazy and I’ve tried every trick
•
The three piles of “don’t know what to do with this yet” and the one
pile of “know what to do with it, but don’t have the energy to do it”
•
It seems like it's everywhere. It would be easier to deal with if it was
limited to one zone
•
In fact, my adorable husband just informed me this morning when
asked what his plans were for today told me he’d “ like to back the
dump trailer up to my garage and empty the contents into that”.
Keep in mind there is NOTHING of his IN that garage! He has an
office and a shop and two machine sheds on the farm with stuff that
I’m positive is not MINE
•
Books and gifts
•
My basement. It’s full of boxes and stuff accumulated over 40
years. I’m 78 years old so I need to clean it out so my kids don’t
have to do it
•
My desk. Everyone's important papers land on my desk along with
receipts and coupons
•
The office and extra bedroom closets are a catch-all for stuff you
think you may use one day but hides out for years
•
The top of my dresser. My make up and body care products "live"
there
•
Guest bedroom -- no room for guests
•
My sewing room. I need to seriously downsize!
•
My small storage area. I think I keep too many "organizer
containers" afraid to let go as I love to organize!
•
My bathroom counter. I don’t have a medicine cabinet, so products
end up staying on my counter
•
Extra bedroom is just storage space, totes galore! All needed since
only dry storage in house but so unattractive and frustrating. Rest
of small house is good
•
Rug hooking room
•
Spare room - catch all for everything. Paper and files,
crafts/hobbies, food pantry, exercise room and books
•
My husband’s “corner”. He’s a hoarder and it’s a mess!
•
Two I'm afraid, equally frustrating! Paper piles and dining room
table
•
I'm pretty sure I have a kitchen island and a dining table: there has
to be something holding up all the stuff that's on them, right?!?
•
Desk and sewing area - all in the same room
•
Front closet. It holds all our coats and more and is a catch all for all
our snacks like chips, crackers, microwave popcorn packs and
more
•
I try to keep mail and receipts organized daily, but sometimes they
pile up for a week or so. Then it’s time to file
•
Under kitchen sink. So much to store there, since no other place to
put things. Must clean/reorganize periodically to prevent chaos
•
Crawlspace
•
My bedside drawers. They face the bed and everything including
papers end up in there
•
Home office....otherwise known as the catch-all room
•
2nd bedroom has become what I refer to as the "catch-all room"
and since I don't need it as a bedroom, I just keep the door closed
to that room, unless I need something from that room or I need to
dump something else in that room
