In a GON Reader Poll, we asked, “How do you tackle big organizing projects?” Here’s how our readers responded: 60% Chip away at it like a master sculptor 22% Ignore it until it becomes an even bigger project! 8% Slay it in one heroic day 7% Other 2% Rally a team of sidekicks (family/friends) 1% Call in the cavalry (professional help) Here are a whole bunch of personal reader comments in response to this poll… I tend to put big projects off. but when I get to them I will chip away with a plan. I write all the steps down. And try and break it up into smaller projects A little bit of all the above. I get as far as I can until I run out of energy or feel stuck. Then I have a friend come over and look at it a different way. She often has just the right idea to finish the job. I have a room that has been collecting piles slated for this weekend. Wish me luck! I try to "chip away" on the project, but then I don't touch it again for a month and it has become a bigger project. I put together a 3-ring binder with tabs and break projects up into different parts. Chip away.....but not quite like a master sculptor! Make lists of the steps required. Try to do something every day, or at least every few days. Check off when done. I never know where to start. Once I get going, I often spend longer than I planned, but sometimes it’s hard to get started at all. I often procrastinate but then go gung ho, but over multiple time frames, until complete. I focus on one category...for example shoes instead of the whole closet. Sometimes, one focus will lead to another. But if it doesn't, I've still finished what I planned.
