How Readers Balance Paper and Digital Tools in Everyday Life
Last month, I asked GON readers, “Which statement describes your
relationship with paper vs. digital tools?” Here are the results of that
poll, along with reader comments and a few of my own observations.

Digital for reminders, paper for lists

3%
I try to be as paperless as possible
2%
I prefer apps and digital tools for everything
1%
I switch back and forth depending on my mood
It didn’t surprise me one bit that paper planners and notebooks came
out on top. There’s something about putting pen to paper that just
feels right. It’s tangible, it’s simple, and for many of us, it helps
thoughts feel clearer and more manageable. Several readers
mentioned that writing things down actually helps them process and
organize their time better…and I completely understand that. There’s
a certain satisfaction in physically crossing something off a list that a
digital checkmark just doesn’t quite match.
That said, it’s clear that digital tools have firmly earned their place in
our lives. Reminders, shared calendars, and quick note-taking on the
go are incredibly convenient. You can be standing in the grocery
store, think of something you need, and have it saved in seconds. Or
set a reminder for something weeks away without worrying you’ll
forget. That kind of support is hard to beat.
What I found especially interesting is how many readers have created
their own personal “hybrid system.” Digital for appointments and
reminders…paper for lists, planning, and brainstorming. It’s not about
choosing one or the other. It’s about using each for what it does best.
That middle ground seems to work beautifully for a lot of people.
Another theme that came through loud and clear is trust…or
sometimes, the lack of it. A few readers shared stories about losing
digital information in the past, which made them hesitant to rely on it
completely. Others mentioned feeling more secure having a paper
backup, even if they primarily use digital tools. On the flip side, some
readers expressed gratitude for digital tools when paper simply wasn’t
practical or possible anymore. It really highlights how personal this
choice can be.
I also smiled at the number of readers who admitted they probably
print more than they should. You’re not alone! Printing out checklists,
calendars, or plans can make things feel more real and easier to
follow. Sometimes seeing it in front of you, on the fridge, on your desk,
or tucked into a planner, makes all the difference.
One more thing I noticed is that many households seem to rely on a
combination system for communication. A digital calendar might work
for one person, but not everyone in the home checks it. So out comes
the paper calendar on the wall or pantry door to keep everyone on the
same page. It’s a great reminder that organization isn’t just about
what works for you. It’s about what works for the people around you,
too.
If there’s one takeaway from this month’s poll, it’s this: there’s no one
“right” way to stay organized. Whether you love your paper planner,
rely on digital tools, or use a mix of both, the best system is the one
you’ll actually use consistently.
Sometimes it’s not about going fully paperless or fully digital. It’s
simply about finding what supports your life, keeps you on track, and
gives you a little peace of mind along the way.
Here are a bunch of personal GON Reader comments…
Personal GON Reader Comments
•
I type my reminders and TO DOs in a planner on the PC and
then print it to take home
•
I use my smart speaker for all my reminders, even for things far
in advance, as it gets it out of my head
•
Every Date comes in digital too, with a reminder. I plan on paper,
also have paper lists. When i plan something with a friend, and
we haven't a day yet, I place a reminder on Sunday 18.00 (6 pm).
Then we try to fix the date!
•
Mostly I use paper: daily "to do", gratitude journal, etc. However, I
do have an online calendar that connects all of my electronic
devices so I can jot down while out and about…things to
do/buy/see/etc. Weekly, I transfer items to my paper list as I set
up the week ahead
•
Digital for appointments and reminders. Paper for thoughts,
plans, some long term information
•
Everything digital is scary. If the cloud dissipates, we’re all
screwed
•
I like having a paper store list, but use my phone to make notes
of what I need as I think of something
•
I have always had a planner. When I taught, I did lesson plans. I
still write down my goals for each day. I also journal. Writing
things down can be a stress reducer and also recording family
events which can be looked back on
•
I don't totally trust digital. I had a PDA years ago and the battery
went dead. After charging it, I had lost ALL my information,
especially appointments
•
I loved paper until I could no longer write or type with my right
hand (long story). Now I am so grateful for digital!
•
I mostly use digital organizing tools, but my husband doesn't
share my calendar. Each month, I print my digital calendar and
post it on the pantry door if he needs to see what I'm up to
•
I have many checklists on computer, including those from GON. I
print them out and love checking off completed tasks
•
I feel that the act of writing something in my planner helps me
with organizing my time better. I need to see a week and a month
at at time. It's reassuring when I physically actually cross
something off of my list of TO DOs. I do wish I could be more
paperless
•
I mostly use digital tools but sometimes use paper for short lists
•
I switch back and forth depending on which works best at the
time
•
I use digital for most of my scheduling, list of things to do and
reminders, but we have a family calendar in the kitchen where we
keep all the family appointments
•
I’m trying to go more digital but I love the backup in case I loose
the digital or delete accidentally
•
I like paper for appointments (lost too many times in my app), but
bills and financial stuff I prefer paper. I do a combo with cooking,
but I probably print too much
•
I like using my digital calendar but I love crossing things off my
paper To-Do List
