When we asked readers how often they wash their windows, the
responses painted an interesting picture of how people approach this
often-overlooked household task.
The largest group of respondents (25%) selected "Other," and after
reading through the comments, it's easy to see why. Window washing
doesn't fit neatly into a schedule for many people. Instead, readers
tend to clean windows based on a variety of factors, including the
weather, the condition of the glass, how visible the dirt is, and even
how difficult the windows are to reach.
One trend that emerged was the popularity of seasonal cleaning.
Many readers reported washing windows once a year in the spring or
twice a year in the spring and fall. This aligns with traditional spring-
cleaning routines, when homeowners tackle larger maintenance
projects and freshen their homes after winter.
Another common theme was selective cleaning. Rather than washing
every window at the same time, several readers focus on the windows
that need attention most. Patio doors, frequently used windows, and
windows that receive direct sunlight often get cleaned more often
because dirt and fingerprints are easier to spot. One reader even
noted that their patio door gets cleaned every week.
The comments also highlighted how technology and tools have
changed the task. Several readers mentioned using hose-end
window-cleaning systems that allow them to clean second-story
windows from the ground. Others rely on professional window-
washing services, particularly for hard-to-reach areas or homes with
many windows.
Weather appears to play a role as well. Readers from different regions
noted that rain sometimes helps rinse outdoor windows, reducing the
need for frequent exterior cleaning. Others mentioned that certain
windows stay relatively clean because of their location or limited use.
One surprising observation was how many readers pay attention to
the inside of their windows. While many people think of dirt
accumulating outdoors, fingerprints, pet nose prints, cooking residue,
and household dust can make interior glass just as dirty. Several
readers specifically mentioned cleaning both sides of the glass during
their annual or seasonal routine.
Safety also appeared throughout the comments. A number of readers
acknowledged that they no longer climb ladders and either hire
professionals or ask family members to handle the outside windows.
It's a good reminder that home maintenance routines often evolve as
our needs and abilities change.
Perhaps the biggest takeaway from the survey is that there is no
universally accepted schedule for washing windows. Some readers
clean monthly, some seasonally, some annually, and some simply
clean when the windows begin to look dirty. What matters most seems
to be finding a routine that works for your home, your lifestyle, and
your view of the world outside your window.
And if the comments are any indication, there's nothing quite like the
satisfaction of looking through a freshly cleaned pane of glass and
realizing just how much brighter everything appears.

•
Some windows get washed more often than others. Upstairs
windows get sprayed on the outside with a hose maybe once or
twice a year. Downstairs windows also get sprayed on the
outside with the hose several times a year. Some inside windows
get washed more often than others such as the sliding glass door
of our kitchen.
•
Each window is cleaned when I do my weekly “Deep Clean”
Each week I empty a room, thoroughly clean, sort/organize
items, wash the window and reset the room.
•
To make it easier to which side of the window streaks are on, I
wash up and down on the inside pane and across of the outside.
An easy way to remember that is inside and up both start with
letters that are straight up and down, whereby outside and across
both start with round letters. Hope that easily helps you find
where the streaks are.
•
We just moved to a new house. We hope to clean it at least once
a year.
•
Seasonal inside and out. Plus spot clean as needed.
•
I have a window cleaner for the outside but do insides when they
look dirty.
•
Once a year in the spring and while I love looking through clean
windows, I absolutely hate washing them.
•
Usually once a year by using a professional window washing
company. If needed they can also check my gutters.
•
At least 2 times per year except kitchen windows which get
washed once a month depending on weather in winter months.
That also involves cleaning screens.
•
Once a year- spring only, yet touch up when needed.
•
Once a year in the spring, but may touch up in the summer if
really needed.
•
The patio door every week!
•
Hired someone for outside. Never done inside. Lived here 12
years!
•
On the outside, Spring only. Fall/Winter rains take care of that
time of year.
•
My dog likes looking out some windows and they get cleaned
more often.
•
Nearing 80 and some things are worth the expense but now my
kids give it as a gift! Nothing to dust…lol!
•
Many years ago, I washed my windows both inside and outside
during the summer. The sun came through so bright it gave me a
headache!!
•
My husband and I clean our windows together every spring and
fall. He gets on a ladder outside and I clean inside. We clean
same windows at the same time so we can show each other if we
missed a spot. I also clean certain windows when needed that
tend to get dirty.
•
Ideally, at least once a year, with touch-ups as needed. For
various reasons, has been much longer recently. Hope to do
them by this fall..
•
I have professional window washer for the outside. Inside, I
rotate a few times a year. We have lots of windows. When I
decorate for various holidays, I clean the windows.
•
Four times a year. I clean and change curtains for each season
so I clean the windows also. I have the windows that you can do
the outside while I'm still in the house so I clean both the inside
and outside.
