Do You Have a Lot of Christmas Holiday

Decor?

In a GON Reader Poll, we asked, “Do you have a lot of Christmas Holiday Decor?” Here’s how our readers responded…along with a bunch of personal comments: 39% I feel I have a reasonable amount. 22% I have TONS...way more than the average person! 21% I don't have much. Just a few items to represent the season. 17% Other 1% None. I don't decorate for the holidays. First time in 15 years I did not travel so I’m in my own home, I have very minimal. Theme: Mr Grinch, some door decor, a wall hanging, stuffed dog toy as my table center piece, a 6” Grow a Crystal Tree…I’m done. My neighbors think it’s hilarious! I recently donated at least 75% of our decorations since we no longer have the space we used to have (smaller home) I have quite a bit, but as the years add up and my house gets smaller, I'm realizing that less is more. Simplicity at this stage of my life has me paring down and keeping it to just the best and most memorable of decorations. I used to have TONS, but I have cut down to a few items to represent the season. However, I do have a lot of tree ornaments that have some sentimental value. Because I don't have a pantry, basement, or garage, Christmas items wind up in the attic, not real accessible. I am going to start passing along some of them and will keep the ones with the most sentimental value. Unfortunately most of it stays in the storage boxes. I just don't have the energy to get it all done. No more candles in all the windows, fireplace and banisters all decorated. I do miss it. I had 13 large totes a few years ago. After 4 yard sales and many donations to the local thrift shoppe, I now have 6 well organized totes of cherished items. I did donate a box full of items to places this year that will use the proceeds to spay and neuter feral cats. I have tons of decorations but only put a portion out. I used to have a lot more, but downsized, so had to part with a lot last year. It was very hard to do, since so much was given to me over the years. I’ve downsized over the years to keep only what is meaningful, which might include something glued back together. Just the ornaments on our indoor tree, plus the gift wrap on presents under it and the greeting cards we receive. I have lots of small items, but I just don’t put most of them out. I have a good amount of items for winter decorating with just a few red berries. Frosted artificial greens, pine cones, snowflakes, silvery items, etc. make for a wintry look. This way I can leave everything up from December through February. I have lots of decorations, but I’m a caregiver for my husband, so I keep decorating minimal, but still cheerful. We have a few outdoor lights. We just have a Christmas tree with lights inside because our golden doodle is only a year and she and our Mexican Chihuahua like to play. Everything we display has a magical memory or was given by someone we love and some we loved and lost. 4 large totes + 3 wreaths + an Angel collection and a Santa collection + table top tree and tote full of handmade ornaments. Not a lot but I have more than I need or use…mostly given to me by my mother and my mother-in-law. I enjoy all of my holiday decor. My father used to say. “If you stood still long enough in my house, you would have a bow stuck on your head!” I need to start downsizing. I will donate some decorations after Christmas this year.
