In a GON Reader Poll, we asked, “What is your biggest organizing challenge?” Here’s how our readers responded: 39% The Sentimental Stuff Standoff 25% Other 16% The Towering Paper Pile 14% The Disappearing Storage Space 6% The Daily Task Tangle Here are a whole bunch of personal reader comments in response to this poll! Too much stuff! Making enough time to adequately work on sorting and selecting items for either keep or discard. It seems just as I settle in to organize, something interrupts that is more important. I’m great at this - so my greatest challenge is getting my hoarder husband to organize and declutter! A place for everything and my disorganized storage spaces are my biggest challenges. Definitely paper - I can never decide if I should keep it or toss it. Sometimes I keep it for my sanity. Then it becomes clutter and I lose my sanity. Mine is a combo of paper and sentimental stuff. The ability to let go of items I think I'll need. Some things can go easily, others not so much. Family photos that were inherited. All of the above! Photos!!! All the stuff in the attic, garage, and storage sheds that belonged to my late husband and his family members. The Impossible Basement All of it, but daily tasks Clothes and my clothes closet Storage unit Craft stuff - all of my card making items, sewing stuff…where do I put it? How do I organize it in a house with zero closets, zero storage, less than 400 square feet? Sorting and digitizing hundreds of photos All of it! Sentimental, papers, accessories, dishes, collectibles. Just everything. Organizing my closets. Attempting to downsize. Getting rid of stuff I no longer have use for because I know how much it cost in the past and want to recover some of that money by trying to sell it. Funny how no one else wants the stuff let alone pay for it! So back to the basement storage room it goes. My husband. He doesn’t want to get rid of anything!! Especially in the kitchen. Dishes, pots, and food items. Need more space to store them The loft. Not having children, nieces, nephews, siblings to share family historical items with, combined with practical and sentimental items from dead mother, mother-in-law, father and 2 brothers. Plus hating to repurchase any non-clothing item I've previously purchased or inherited. No wonder I'm an organizing wreck! Actually, all of them. So many tasks, I don't know what to do first, so nothing at all gets done. And SO much stuff! I have one floor and no basement, garage, or pantry. Kitchen has a sort of lazy Susan storage instead of shelves, not a good use of space, and items aren't very accessible. Have concluded I can't store much, though it's a way for me not to accumulate things. Paper is #1, and a close second is things related to craft projects never finished. I am slowly selling those items off, donating what doesn't sell. My basement and family room full with 50 years of accumulated stuff that I want to declutter and organize.
