October 2026 Organizing Checklist by Maria Gracia https://www.getorganizednow.com October has a way of making us look both inward and ahead. We spend more time at home, the holidays are getting closer, and all those little things we'd like to finish before winter suddenly seem a bit more noticeable. Rather than filling your October TO DO list with big projects, use this month's organizing checklist to make one manageable improvement each day. You'll tackle household clutter, fall cleaning, paperwork, meal planning, seasonal preparation, time management, and a few tasks designed simply to make everyday life easier and more enjoyable. ___ Oct 1 Celebrate International Coffee Day...and Organize Your Coffee Zone. In honor of International Coffee Day, give the spot where you make your morning coffee or tea a quick refresh. Toss stale supplies, wipe the area clean, corral loose pods or tea bags, and put your favorite mugs where they're easy to reach. Then reward yourself with a cup of something you love. ___ Oct 2 Do a Ten-Item Declutter. Find ten things you no longer need, use, or want. Donate, recycle, toss, or relocate them. Ten items may not sound like much, but small decluttering sessions add up quickly without making your entire day about organizing. ___ Oct 3 Check Your Fall Outerwear. Gather jackets, coats, scarves, hats, gloves, and umbrellas. Make sure everything still fits, is in good condition, and is easy to find. Donate anything you no longer wear and make a note of anything that needs replacing before colder weather arrives. ___ Oct 4 Organize One Kitchen Drawer. Pick the drawer that annoys you most. Empty it, wipe it out, remove duplicates or things that don't belong, and put back only what you actually use. Don't turn this into a whole-kitchen project. One drawer is enough. ___ Oct 5 Create a "Leaving the House" Spot. Choose one place near the door for things that need to leave with you, such as returns, library books, packages, reusable shopping bags, or items for someone else. This simple organizing system can prevent a surprising number of forgotten errands. ___ Oct 6 Clean Something You Rarely See. Look up, down, or behind something. Dust the top of a tall cabinet, vacuum behind a chair, wipe a baseboard, or clean beneath a small appliance. Hidden dirt may not bother you every day, but removing some of it feels surprisingly satisfying. ___ Oct 7 Check Your Fall Calendar. Review the rest of October and the beginning of November for appointments, birthdays, school events, travel, deadlines, and activities. Add anything you've been keeping in your head so you aren't relying on memory alone. ___ Oct 8 Make Dinner Easier Tonight. Before the afternoon gets away from you, decide what's for dinner. Check what you already have, pull something from the freezer if necessary, and do any small prep you can now. Meal planning doesn't always require planning an entire week. ___ Oct 9 Find Five Things That Belong Somewhere Else. Walk through one room and look for five items that have wandered away from their proper homes. Put them back. This is an easy way to reduce household clutter when you don't have time for a full organizing session. ___ Oct 10 Give Your Linen Closet Some Breathing Room. Straighten towels and sheets, match up sets, and remove anything worn out or rarely used. If your shelves are packed tightly, consider whether you really need every blanket, towel, and pillowcase you're storing. Want a clutter-free home once and for all? With Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples' Day tomorrow, check whether the holiday affects your plans. Confirm school or work schedules, mail or banking needs, appointments, errands, and anything else that might operate differently. ___ Oct 12 Make Today About Respect and Curiosity. Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples' Day share today's date, although observances vary across the country. Take a few minutes to learn something about the history of your community or the Indigenous peoples connected to the land where you live. Organizing our lives can include making room to learn something new. ___ Oct 13 Start a Holiday Gift List. The holidays may still feel far away, but they're close enough to begin planning without pressure. List the people you normally buy for, jot down gift ideas as they occur to you, and note anything you've already purchased. Future-you will appreciate this. ___ Oct 14 Clean Out Your Reusable Bags. Gather shopping totes, insulated bags, and reusable grocery bags. Remove receipts and miscellaneous items, wipe or wash bags as needed, and keep a reasonable number together where you'll remember to take them. ___ Oct 15 Do a Mid-Month Reset. We're halfway through October. Look around and ask, "What would make the rest of this month easier?" Maybe it's catching up on laundry, making an appointment, clearing your desk, planning meals, or saying no to something you don't really have time for. ___ Oct 16 Organize Your Baking Supplies. Cooler weather often brings more baking. Check flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, spices, extracts, decorating supplies, and other ingredients. Toss anything unusable and add missing staples to your grocery list. ___ Oct 17 Clear One Chair. You know the chair. The one that quietly becomes a holding area for clothes, bags, papers, or things you'll "deal with later." Return everything to its proper place and let the chair be a chair again. ___ Oct 18 Prepare Your Home for Overnight Guests. Even if nobody is currently scheduled to visit, take ten minutes to think about what you'd need if someone were staying overnight. Fresh sheets, extra towels, a cleared surface, and a place for luggage can make future hosting much easier. ___ Oct 19 Give Your Refrigerator a Quick Reset. Toss spoiled food, wipe one sticky shelf, group similar items together, and move foods that need to be eaten soon toward the front. A more organized refrigerator can reduce food waste and make meal planning easier. ___ Oct 20 Check Your Cold-Weather Emergency Supplies. Locate flashlights, batteries, candles or other safe emergency lighting, blankets, a basic first- aid kit, and any other supplies your household relies on during power outages or severe weather. Replace anything missing or expired. Do you want to get all of your paper organized once and for all? My Oh-So- Organized Filing System is a filing system AND an organizing system rolled into one! Visit: https://www.getorganizednow.com/filing-system.html?cl ___ Oct 21 Organize One Digital Mess. Choose one: your computer desktop, downloads folder, email inbox, phone photos, browser bookmarks, or open tabs. Spend 15 minutes deleting, filing, or closing what you no longer need. ___ Oct 22 Make a "Before the Holidays" List. Write down the household tasks you'd like completed before holiday activities begin. Keep the list realistic. Prioritize what truly matters and give yourself permission to leave unnecessary projects off entirely. ___ Oct 23 Declutter Something You Have Too Many Of. Pick one category: coffee mugs, food storage containers, pens, reusable water bottles, tote bags, candles, beauty products, or anything else that has multiplied. Keep your favorites and let some of the excess go. ___ Oct 24 Put Summer Completely Away. If summer items are still hanging around, finish the seasonal transition. Store beach towels, sandals, outdoor toys, fans, summer decorations, and warm-weather gear you won't need again for several months. ___ Oct 25 Prepare for the Time Change. Daylight Saving Time ends next Sunday, November 1. Think ahead about any clocks you'll need to change (if applicable in your area), especially appliance, wall, or vehicle clocks that don't update automatically. This is also a good reminder to make sure your morning and evening routines work well as the days grow darker. ___ Oct 26 Make Your Entryway Winter-Ready. Clear out anything that doesn't belong and make room for the coats, boots, hats, gloves, and other cold-weather gear that will soon be coming through the door. A little preparation now can prevent an entryway clutter pileup later. ___ Oct 27 Use Something You've Been Saving. Burn the nice candle, open the fancy soap, use the pretty stationery, cook with the specialty ingredient, or wear something you've been "saving for good." Your home doesn't need to become a storage facility for things you're afraid to enjoy. ___ Oct 28 Do a Halloween Safety Check. If you'll have trick-or-treaters, make sure walkways and steps are clear, outdoor lighting works, cords aren't creating tripping hazards, and decorations aren't blocking the path to your door. If you'll be out that evening, make your plans now. ___ Oct 29 Get November Paperwork Ready. Look ahead for bills, renewals, forms, appointments, insurance matters, school paperwork, or other administrative tasks coming up next month. Handle one early if you can. ___ Oct 30 Give Halloween a Head Start. Put candy near the door, finish costumes, locate treat bags, charge phones, check flashlights, and take care of anything else you'll need tomorrow. A few minutes of preparation can make Halloween much more fun and much less frantic. ___ Oct 31 Enjoy Halloween...and Contain the Chaos. Happy Halloween! Keep a basket or designated spot handy for costume pieces, candy, flashlights, decorations, and other Halloween odds and ends. Enjoy the festivities today and tonight. The bigger cleanup can wait until tomorrow. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ by Maria Gracia - Get Organized Now! https://www.getorganizednow.com FREE Goodies and E-zine filled with tips, ideas, articles and more to help you organize your home, your office and your life at the Get Organized Now!
