Thirty Simple Organizing Tasks for a Clutter-Free Home, Better Time
Management, and an Organized Start to Fall
September is a natural turning point. Summer routines begin to fade,
schedules fill up again, and cooler days remind us that another season is on
its way. Rather than trying to organize your entire home at once, use this
month's checklist to make one useful improvement each day. You'll tackle
everything from household clutter and fall preparation to cleaning, planning,
paperwork, time management, and a few things that are simply good for you.
___ Sep 1
Give September a Purpose. Before the month gets busy,
choose one word or short phrase to guide you through
September, such as "finish," "simplify," "prepare," or "enjoy."
Keep it somewhere visible and use it to help decide what
deserves your time this month.
___ Sep 2
Create a Household Waiting Zone. Designate one small
basket, shelf, or folder for things that are temporarily waiting
for something else…an item to be returned, a form awaiting a
signature, or something that needs repair. You'll stop those in-
between items from wandering around the house.
___ Sep 3
Clean the Forgotten Handles. Wipe down doorknobs, cabinet
pulls, refrigerator handles, remote controls, light switches, and
other frequently touched spots that don't always make it onto
the regular cleaning list.
___ Sep 4
Make a "Use It Up" List. Look through your refrigerator,
freezer, pantry, toiletries, and household supplies for things
that should be used soon. Make a short list and deliberately
work them into meals and routines before buying
replacements.
___ Sep 5
Fix One Daily Annoyance. Think about something small that
irritates you repeatedly…a drawer that sticks, cords that
tangle, a lamp in the wrong place, or a basket that's always
overflowing. Spend a few minutes fixing the problem instead of
continuing to work around it.
___ Sep 6
Plan a Labor-Free Labor Day. With Labor Day tomorrow,
decide what you can do today to make the holiday more
relaxing. Finish one necessary chore, prepare food ahead, or
clear tomorrow's schedule of something that really can wait.
___ Sep 7
Take Labor Day Off…From Something. In honor of Labor
Day, deliberately give yourself a break from one task you
normally feel obligated to do. Not everything has to be
accomplished simply because you have time to do it.
___ Sep 8
Audit Your Drop Zones. Notice where things naturally land
when people come home…mail, purses, backpacks, jackets,
receipts, and keys. Instead of fighting those habits, add a
hook, basket, tray, or other simple organizer exactly where it's
needed.
___ Sep 9
Make Your Freezer Easier to Shop. Before your next grocery
trip, write down what's hiding in your freezer. Plan at least two
upcoming meals around foods you already own and move
those ingredients where you'll see them.
___ Sep 10
Organize Your Car's Paperwork. Check your glove
compartment for outdated insurance cards, old registration
paperwork, expired coupons, receipts, and miscellaneous
papers. Keep only what actually belongs in the vehicle.
___ Sep 11
Pause and Remember. On this anniversary of September 11,
2001, set aside a few quiet moments to remember the lives
lost, the families forever changed, and the courage shown by
first responders and ordinary people who helped one another.
Consider honoring the day with a small act of kindness,
service, or gratitude for the people you care about.
___ Sep 12
Do a "Nothing Belongs Here" Sweep. Choose one room and
remove everything that actually belongs somewhere else.
Don't reorganize the whole room; simply return the strays to
their proper homes.
___ Sep 13
Preserve a Family Story. Grandparents Day is a wonderful
reminder that memories deserve organizing, too. Call an older
relative or loved one and ask about a favorite childhood
memory, family tradition, or story you've never heard. Write it
down or record it with permission.
___ Sep 14
Give Your Calendar Some Breathing Room. Look at the
next two weeks and identify any days that are becoming
overloaded. Move anything flexible now rather than waiting
until an impossibly busy day forces you to do it.
___ Sep 15
Clean Under Something. Choose one piece of furniture or
appliance you rarely move and see what's underneath it.
Vacuum, sweep, retrieve lost objects, and enjoy knowing
there's at least one less mysterious territory in your home.
___ Sep 16
Build a "Before Winter" List. Write down outdoor and
household tasks that need to happen before cold weather
arrives, such as servicing the furnace, putting away patio
furniture, checking weather stripping, or storing garden
supplies. Schedule anything that requires an appointment.
___ Sep 17
Give Your Wallet a Makeover. Remove old receipts, expired
coupons, unnecessary cards, and anything else making your
wallet bulky. While you're there, check whether any gift cards
have balances you'd like to use.
___ Sep 18
Create an Errand Route. List the errands you've been
postponing, group them by location, and plan one efficient
route. Combining stops saves driving time and helps prevent
errands from consuming several different days.
___ Sep 19
Get Ahead on One October Task. Think of something you
normally wait until October to do and begin it now. Schedule
an appointment, buy needed supplies, make a reservation, or
complete the first step while your calendar still has room.
___ Sep 20
Clear the Tops. Choose the top of your refrigerator, dresser,
washer and dryer, bookcase, or another horizontal surface that
tends to become accidental storage. Remove what doesn't
belong and resist the temptation to refill the empty space.
___ Sep 21
Prepare Your Fall Comfort Zone. Gather the things that
make cooler evenings more enjoyable…a favorite throw,
slippers, books, puzzles, tea, or whatever says cozy to you.
Give them an accessible home so they're ready when you
want them.
___ Sep 22
Welcome Fall at the Front Door. The first day of fall is a
perfect time for a seasonal entrance refresh. Sweep the porch
or walkway, shake out the doormat, remove tired summer
décor, and add a simple autumn touch if you enjoy decorating.
___ Sep 23
Rescue Your Photos From Text Messages. Scroll through
recent conversations and save any meaningful photos or
videos you'd hate to lose. File them with your other digital
photos rather than leaving important memories buried inside
message threads.
___ Sep 24
Check Your Medicine Cabinet for Non-Medicine Clutter.
Remove empty packages, dried-out products, hotel samples
you'll never use, and miscellaneous items that migrated there.
Keep everyday essentials easy to reach and follow appropriate
disposal guidance for medications you no longer need.
___ Sep 25
Make a "Five-Minute Wins" List. Write down ten useful tasks
you can complete in five minutes or less, such as making an
appointment, watering a plant, filing a paper, or wiping a shelf.
Keep the list handy for small pockets of unexpected time.
___ Sep 26
Give One Collection Boundaries. Whether it's mugs, books,
candles, craft supplies, reusable bags, or something else you
enjoy, decide how much space you're willing to give the
collection. Let the available space determine when it's time to
stop adding or start editing.
___ Sep 27
Set Up a Donation Deadline. If you already have a bag or
box of donations sitting around, put it in your vehicle or
schedule a pickup today. Decluttering isn't finished until the
unwanted items actually leave your home.
___ Sep 28
Prepare for Shorter Days. Check outdoor lights, replace
burned-out bulbs, locate flashlights, and consider whether any
dark hallways or entrances need better lighting as daylight
hours continue to shrink.
___ Sep 29
Close One Open Loop. Choose one unfinished task that's
been quietly nagging at you and finish it completely today.
Make the call, return the item, mail the package, submit the
form, or make the decision. One completed loose end can feel
better than five newly started projects.
___ Sep 30
Give October a Head Start. Review the coming month for
appointments, birthdays, bills, travel, seasonal activities, and
deadlines. Then choose one thing you can prepare today so
October begins with you already one step ahead.
