Organize Your Clothes Closet
Challenges
Each challenge is designed to help you declutter and organize your
clothes closet.
•
Day 1: Declutter: Choose 5 items in each category that you’re no
longer wearing (pants, shirts, dresses, shoes, purses, etc.) Put
those items in a large tote bag. Drive them on over to a local
charitable organization. Do this every week, until you’re left with only
the clothing you truly love…it looks good on you, fits your body
nicely, and you feel great when you’re wearing it.
•
Day 2: Gather all empty hangers. Put them to one side of your
clothing rod. If you have excess hangers (way more than you’ll ever
need), get rid of some or transfer a number of them to another
closet in your home where they’re needed. By the way, aim to only
have hangers in your closet that are the same look and style; doing
so helps make your closet a lot less chaotic and significantly more
organized.
•
Day 3: Sort like-items together: I have my clothes closet divided
into two sections: Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter…and both of
those categories are further divided into shirts, pants, skirts, etc.
Sort like-items together to make daily selection easy for you. If you
don’t have space in your closet for both seasons, store the off-
season clothing in a tote box or empty suitcase that isn’t being used,
preferably in an out-of-the way area other than your closet.
•
Day 4: Get shoes off the floor: Either put them on closet shelves,
if you have shelving, or on a stackable shoe rack. Arrange similar
types of shoes together, like all sandals, all dress shoes, all
sneakers, etc.
•
Day 5: Get purses off the floor: Put purses/handbags on shelves
in your closet, or affix some Command Strip hooks and hang them.
•
Day 6: Add some decorative touches: One way that really helps
to keep your clothes closet organized and calm is to think of it more
as a “room,” rather than a “closet.” Add some decorative touches,
like a pretty framed photo on one of the shelves, or a motivational
“saying” on the wall…something that makes you smile when you
see it.
•
Day 7: Commit to the “One In-Two Out” Technique: Anytime you
buy any clothing or accessories that are going to be stored in your
clothes closet, for every item you bring in, two must go…either
donated, given away to a friend, or thrown out if there is no more life
left in that item.
