Clear space, reduce stress, and make your garage more functional one
small step at a time
Take control of your garage without feeling overwhelmed! This
challenge focuses on quick, manageable tasks that help you clear
clutter, create order, and make better use of your space…all in small
steps that feel doable.
Garages have a way of becoming catch-all spaces for everything from
tools and sports equipment to holiday decorations, empty boxes, and
items we meant to donate months ago. The good news? You don’t have
to tackle the whole garage in one exhausting weekend.
This challenge breaks the process into simple mini-challenges you can
complete in short bursts. A little progress each day adds up quickly, and
before long, your garage can feel cleaner, safer, and much easier to use
1.
Clear One Small Surface. Choose one shelf corner, workbench
section, or tiny area and completely clear it off.
2.
Toss Empty Boxes. Break down and recycle empty cardboard
boxes you’ve been saving “just in case.”
3.
Gather Loose Trash. Walk through the garage with a trash bag and
collect obvious garbage and broken items.
4.
Check Old Paint Cans. Look through old paint cans and dried-up
stains. Set aside anything you no longer need and check your local
community guidelines for proper paint disposal or recycling.
5.
Declutter One Tool Area. Straighten and sort one toolbox, drawer,
or small tool section.
6.
Sweep One Section. Instead of the whole garage, sweep just one
small area today.
7.
Find Items to Donate. Fill one small donation box with items you no
longer use.
8.
Untangle Cords. Sort through extension cords, chargers, or holiday
light strands and toss damaged ones.
9.
Organize Gardening Supplies. Gather gloves, hand tools, seed
packets, and pots into one designated spot.
10.
Clear the Garage Door Area. Remove anything blocking the garage
door tracks or entry area.
11.
Match Up Sports Equipment. Pair loose balls, gloves, rackets, or
accessories and donate extras nobody uses.
12.
Declutter Car Supplies. Go through windshield fluid, ice scrapers,
jumper cables, and car cleaning items.
13.
Create a Recycling Station. Set up simple bins or containers for
recycling if you don’t already have them.
14.
Sort One Storage Bin. Pick just one tote or bin and quickly decide
what stays and what goes.
15.
Hang Something Up. Install or use a hook for bikes, chairs, cords,
hoses, or tools to free up floor space.
16.
Wipe Down Shelves. Dust and wipe one shelf or storage area to
freshen things up.
17.
Collect Loose Hardware. Gather random screws, nails, hooks, and
bolts into one container or organizer.
18.
Make a “Belongs Elsewhere” Basket. Fill a basket with items that
belong inside the house and bring those inside to be put into their
proper homes.
19.
Create Walking Space. Clear enough room for an easy path
through the garage without stepping around clutter.
20.
Celebrate Your Progress. Stand back, admire what you
accomplished, and enjoy the calmer, more functional space you’ve
created!
Continue doing each of these each week, a tiny bit at a time (maybe 15-
20 minute bursts), until the garage is fairly clear and clean.
