Organizing Challenges Mini Organizing Challenges: August For each week of August, our organizing challenges will be focused on Being Prepared. Here are your mini weekly challenges... Week 1 (August 3 - 9) Don’t wait until you’re thirsty. It’s very easy to get dehydrated, so be prepared ahead of time…especially if you’re doing something that requires you to bring water along and it’s not readily available, like when you’re hiking or biking. Did you know that if you’re thirsty, you’re ALREADY dehydrated? Water is the most important fluid we need to drink and yet it often comes second to coffee and sugary drinks. The recommended daily water intake is eight to ten 8-ounce glasses. In hot weather we need more water because we lose more of it from sweating. When we're dehydrated, we tend to feel sluggish and be more prone to headaches. When you wake up in the morning, drink two 8 ounce glasses of water. Then every hour after that, drink 8 ounces each. By the end of the day you'll have had 10 servings! You can set alerts on your phone to remind you. Do you get bored with drinking plain water? Try infused water. Just fill a pitcher with water, add berries and a sprig of mint, and keep it in the fridge. Week 2 (August 10 - 16) Get ready for the new school year ahead. Help your kids get back into the school year groove by having them go to bed 15 minutes earlier each night (until they’re at their planned school bed time) before school starts. Plan to begin cooking twice as much for dinner, once school starts, and freeze the extra servings for quick and healthy meals on busy school nights. Does everyone have their school supplies? If not, pick up your local school's list at your favorite department store and fill those backpacks. Inventory clothing/school uniforms and make a list of what’s needed for your kids to wear for the new school year ahead. Don’t forget to register your child for school if needed. Week 3 (August 17 - 23) Schedule medical and dental checkups…and restock your medicine cabinet.  School (especially school sports teams) require medical check-ups/physicals before the start of the new season. Are your kids' vaccinations up to date? Schedule appointments now for each family member to get their yearly checkups. While you’re at it, remember that cold and flu season is right around the corner. Clean out your medicine cabinet and safely discard any empty or expired medications. Never flush medications down the toilet. A safe way of disposal is to mix them with old coffee grounds, cat litter, or something similar and then put them in the garbage. Restock needed medications such as cold medicine, cough drops, and vitamins now. When a cold bug hits, you’ll be better prepared. Week 4: (August 24 - 30) It’s not too early to start prepping for fall and winter holidays. Are you making Halloween costumes this year? Shop now for what you need and work on a costume a little bit at a time until Trick or Treat. Do you need to declutter the guest room for Thanksgiving visitors? Will you be traveling for Thanksgiving and/or Christmas? Book flights and reservations early to have the best rates and peace of mind. Is the special item your child wants most for Christmas on sale now, or did you see something that may make the perfect gift for a sibling? Start shopping now and avoid the rush.
