In a world where environmental consciousness is paramount, even
seemingly mundane tasks like doing laundry can become opportunities to
make a positive impact. The journey toward a more sustainable lifestyle
begins at home, and your laundry room is no exception.
Here are three environmentally friendly tips for washing clothes that go
beyond the spin cycle, offering a fresh perspective on how small changes in
your laundry habits can contribute to a healthier planet and a longer life for
your wardrobe.
1.
Wash in cold water only. I very rarely change this setting on my
washing machine. Unless clothes are super dirty and stained, a cold
water wash will get them fresh and clean. Plus, washing in cold water
saves a ton of energy!
2.
Invest in a High-Efficiency Washing Machine: If you're in the market
for a new washing machine, consider investing in a high-efficiency
model. These machines use less water and energy, making them more
environmentally friendly. Look for the ENERGY STAR label, which
signifies that the appliance meets strict energy efficiency guidelines.
Over time, upgrading to a high-efficiency washing machine can
significantly reduce your overall water and energy consumption.
3.
Air Dry Whenever Possible: If you live in a warm weather state, take
advantage of sunny days and opt to air dry your clothes instead of
using a clothes dryer. Hanging your laundry outdoors not only reduces
energy consumption but also helps extend the lifespan of your clothing.
The sun's natural bleaching properties can also help keep whites bright
without the need for additional chemical-based whiteners. If you live in
a cold-weather state like me, air dry your clothes on an indoor drying
rack. You can always air-dry outside or in…and add your clothes to the
clothes dryer for just 10 minutes to smooth them and get out the
wrinkles.
