Did You Know? Fun Facts These Slang Terms May Be Older Than You Think If you think the word “excellent” originated from the movie, Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, back in the late 80s, you may be surprised to learn that its first known use was in the 14th century…and the term was used often in 1604! These words I use in everyday conversation today, as it turns out, originated way back as well: Stunning (1849): Love this word...and I use it often, especially on social media. Wicked (1920): You gotta love a word that can mean both bad or good, depending on the context of your sentence. Cool (1933): No, this word didn’t originate with The Fonz...although he’s probably who comes to mind when most of us think of it. Awesome (1958): This is one of those words that I used all the time in the 80’s and, to the dismay of my teenage daughter, still do today. Awesome, meaning "inspiring reverential awe," goes back to 1598. Hot (1845): Not in the sense of something being hot, like the temperature of the sun, the word hot is often used to today to describe “someone who” or “something that” is sexy. First known use in this context…1845.
