How to Clean the Toilet Bowl and How Often

by Maria Gracia | Updated on October 1, 2023 Join our newsletter to be notified when new content is added to our website. Cleaning a toilet isn’t exactly the most fun chore, but with the right tools and cleaning techniques, it can be quick, easy, and not nearly as unpleasant as you may think it has to be. Here’s the MOST important part: The more often you clean it, the less unpleasant it will be! Create a routine: for cleaning your  toilet, which should be every third day…or more often as needed. It may need to be completed more often if you have potty-training children, if a family member is sick, or if you have a large family. Choosing a cleaner: There are variety of cleaners that can be used. However, do not mix different cleaners since it can cause a toxic mix of chemicals. Different types of cleaners may include commercial toilet bowl cleaner, white vinegar, borax, baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, OR chlorine bleach. Use gloves to keep your hands clean and safe. Should you use an automatic cleaner? If you clean your toilet regularly, this is money wasted. Also, many of these products contain bleach which can help with germs, but can   also damage brass and rubber parts inside. Allow the cleaner time to work: Whatever cleaning liquid you choose will need to sit in the toilet bowl for a few minutes. While you wait, clean other areas of your bathroom. Scrub the inside of the bowl: Use a toilet brush to scrub the inside of the bowl, concentrating on under the rim and as far down the trap as possible. Close the lid, flush, and return the brush to its holder. Buy a brush for every bathroom in your house. Clean the exterior parts: Spray all parts of the exterior (pedestal by the bolts, as well as the top and bottom of the lid and seat) with a disinfectant spray and use a designated rag. Don’t cross contaminate other areas, such as the sink. Alternately, use disposable disinfectant wipes. Don’t forget the toilet handle. Back to Cleaning Secrets Index
