Home Preparation for Winter Weather While it’s sweltering hot and you are looking for ways to stay cool, we are pretty sure you aren’t thinking about preparing your home for the winter weather. Believe it or not, now is the perfect time to get your home ready for the cool weather. So grab a cold glass of lemonade, cozy up to the air conditioner, and let’s go over that list of to-do’s! Check Your Chimney If you are one of the lucky ones, and your home has a gorgeous fireplace to warm your toes by, you should be having your chimney cleaned and checked now while it’s easier. Chimney repair is simply overlooked until it becomes a necessity. Avoid any issues this winter by taking that pre-emptive strike and making sure it’s in great working order. You might even be able to find a decent discount for doing it now when it’s easier, due to weather, rather than later. Have a Furnace Tune Up There is nothing worse than the furnace going out and we all know it only goes out on the coldest night there is! Having a tune up now will cost you around $100+ and could save you lots by not breaking down on a cold night. Maintenance almost always avoids repairs so take this time to check around and find a good furnace person. Have You Checked the Attic? Icicles may look beautiful in the winter but they are not something you want to have. Even worse, you could end up with ice dams. Both of these phenomena are due to poor insulation in the attic and could be avoided. Make arrangements to have someone come in and check for air leaks and get the insulation you need. Best part? You could not only save yourself from much needed repairs on the roof and attic, you can save a ton on your energy bill by getting the right insulation in the house. Caulk the Windows More of our heat escapes out the windows and into the frigid air. The same could be said about your air conditioning making its way into the sweltering heat. If you have gaps in the frame of your windows and doors that are about the width of a nickel, it’s time to caulk those up. This is a great DIY project that will cost you a Saturday afternoon or two and the cost of caulk from your local hardware store. Be sure that the caulk is made for outdoor use and weather proof. You can also check weather stripping to make sure daylight cannot seep into the home through cracks and gaps. Clean the Gutters Sometimes we just plain forget about the gutters getting clogged. While you may not need to clean them right now, you will need to when autumn rolls around and starts blowing leaves all over the place. Clogged gutters can lead to a major buildup of water that can damage the roof and siding. You can also look for the gutters that keep debris out so that you don’t have to worry about cleaning them out each year. North or South, East or West, rain or snow, we all have to worry about preparing our home for winter. The great thing is that there is plenty of time to add a few extra to do’s to your monthly checklist over the next couple of months. Click to Return to Article Index
