Stretching Your Boundaries

'Guess what I did this weekend,' asked a friend I saw at the grocery store yesterday. She didn't wait for me to guess. 'I went zip lining with my kids, and I did it too! Across a river!' My mouth dropped open. 'Sounds terrifying to me, weren't you scared?' I asked. 'Yes,' said Karen, 'and I did it anyway. I needed to stretch myself a bit.' Karen obviously felt good about having done this, proud and confident, glad to have stepped out of her comfort zone. By the way, Karen is 79.

Many of us go to pilates, yoga, or other classes to help stretch our bodies and keep us more flexible, but how often do we do things that stretch our minds or spirits? Surely such things might be just as good for us. Too often we cage ourselves within boundaries of our own construction. Our boundaries are often ones of fear, a fear which may not be well founded, and yet we let our apprehension stand in our way of taking chances, or even going for the things we want.

We all have our comfort zones, our routines that keep our stress at bay, and make us feel secure, and most of the time they are a good thing. None of us want to live all the time in a state of anxiety and risk. But it can keep us from enjoying satisfying experiences.

Challenging yourself at something often leads to a greater sense of self confidence, a feeling of 'I can do this,' or 'if I can do this, I can do a lot of other things I didn't think I could.' Afterward, you may find you deal with changes more easily, things that before would have unsettled you, been outside your comfort boundaries, are easier to deal with because you have learned you can. And the next time you need or want to do something scary, it will likely be easier.

All that said, I do not recommended you do something which truly terrifies you. If your inner voice is saying, 'I don't feel good about this, I think it is a really bad idea' you should listen. There is a difference between reasonable fear in a situation over which you have control, and doing something that frightens you so much it might be harmful. You have to weigh the situation for yourself, at least on the big things, like mountain climbing, skydiving or hang gliding, etc. Please don't go running out tomorrow to do these in an effort to stretch yourself. There is no need to risk life and limb in search of something new and stimulating.

Start with baby steps. Experiment with smaller things, maybe keep a journal as you do them and see where it takes you. Start doing ordinary things in a different manner. If you generally don't look at the editorial page of the newspaper, or the business columns, try reading them every day. Try taking a different route to work or other places you go on a regular basis. Who knows, you may pass places you have never seen before and want to check them out. Try a vegan or vegetarian meal, or go to an ethnic restaurant you've never tried.

Travel is a wonderful way to broaden your outlook. Try a nearby city. Then perhaps you will go another time to a different part of the country or even to another country. Have a go at meditation. Try a new hobby or study a foreign language. Join a group...for volunteering, exercise, reading, whatever. You can find a zillion ways to do something new, something you have been avoiding, or putting off until you 'find the right time.' Some of these may sound small to you, but for other people, they are going to take a lot of courage. It's all OK.

Many of the above suggestions involve going places, but stretching boundaries can be done in other ways too. Mental boundaries can be as confining as any other. If you usually read fiction, read some history or economics, or something outside of your usual interests. Listen to a different news station, maybe one whose views you do not agree with. You don't have to join them, Just listen to what they have to say. In these divisive times, it is more important than ever to be able to listen respectfully, even if you do not agree. Try a different genre of music than normal. Get to know a neighbor you normally wave to, but with whom you have never spent much time talking. Learn a new cooking or craft skill.

Keep in mind, of course, that sometimes things do not always work. Maybe you try volunteering somewhere, but find it is not the right fit. Or sitting still in meditation makes you want to run out of the room screaming. Or spicy curries give you terrible indigestion. OK, you have learned did not go well. Now try something else, don't retreat back behind personal fences.

Trying new things can be scary, but the rewards are beneficial. You may find that you try new things more easily in the future, your insight into issues may grow, your creativity may increase, you may make new friends, have more self confidence, feel more energetic and even happier. Surely these potential benefits make it worth a try!

I love to cook...although I don't have a ton of extra time to do so. That's why I have to come up with recipes that are a cinch to make, don't include weird ingredients, are nutritious and healthy, taste great and I can whip up quickly and easily.

Plus, I love to feel good...look whatever I can to better myself... AND exude confidence in my life. In light of this...

  TO DO This Week

Week Beginning August 5th

1. Inventory and pick up canning supplies. If you grow your own vegetables and fruits, canning is the perfect way to enjoy these foods all through the year. Inventory your canning supplies, and pick up anything you need to make salsa, jam, preserves, and pickled vegetables from your garden bounty.

2. Buy school supplies. If you have kids or grandkids in school, or perhaps you're in school yourself, now is the perfect time to stock up on school supplies. If you have supplies left over from last year, rummage through those first to see if there are any you can use.

3. Reconnect with your inner self. When was the last time you were able to take an hour for yourself to do nothing more than reflect on your life, your goals, and your dreams? Make this TO DO a priority this week and reconnect with yourself.

4. Clean the shelves in your laundry room. Empty off a shelf or two in your laundry room and give the surfaces a good cleaning to remove any detergent gunk, lint, dust, and other grime. Weed out any laundry supplies you no longer need. Then, put the keepers back where they belong.

5. Switch something out. Whether it's changing the current sheets on your bed for a fresh set, swapping some decor you're tired of with other decor you've been storing, or trading in your older electronic devices for new ones, switch something out this week.

  In Closing

Do whatever makes your spirit glow out loud.
