Sometimes Decluttering is Best Done Alone

Have you ever started on a decluttering job, especially a big one like your closet, only to have your spouse or significant other interfere? Perhaps they had the best of intentions, but just caused you to fall off track?

I was cleaning out my closet not too long ago. I had a big shopping bag on the floor outside of the closet for donations, and I felt in the mood to really turn loose of some things I have not worn in a long time. I was on a roll, when my husband came along. 'Why are you getting rid of that?' he asked, as I tossed a blue blouse into the donations bag. 'I always liked that shirt.' I told him I liked it too, once, but not so much any more, and I had not worn it in over a year. He peered into my donate bag and said, 'Well, what's wrong with that dress?'

We have been married quite a while. I gave him a look and suggested he go find a something to watch on TV, and leave me to my closet. While he is not a hoarder by any stretch, and truly is quite organized, he does sometimes have trouble getting rid of stuff. That's just him. So when doing serious cleaning out, I prefer doing so alone.

My friend Brenda recently recounted how she was trying to clean out the pantry, which had somehow gotten weevils in a lot of pasta, flour, etc. She was in the process of tossing them all when her husband walked by and actually asked her if she couldn't just wash off the spaghetti before she cooked it. Needless to say, he got 'the look' too.

It's not always women who run into obstacles cleaning out. Josh, a competitive cyclist, was setting aside a couple of bikes to sell so he could buy a new one. His wife questioned why he would get rid of two 'perfectly good' bikes to just buy another.

You may recall the mindset of The Great Depression. You repaired things, you used things up, wore things out, or turned it into something else. That is certainly not a bad idea in some cases. In fact, we could probably use more of that attitude today. That being said, it's not applicable in every case. It's certainly not applicable in the case of the weevil-infested flour. It's also not the case if you'll never use whatever it is and are not feeling especially creative to turn whatever it is into something else. In this case, donating whatever it is (or selling it), is the next best option...certainly better than allowing it to sit in your house.

Bottom line...if you live with someone who is comfortable with decluttering, you may be able to do it whenever the urge hits. But if you don't, you might be better off making it a solo job.
