Meticulous Planner Triggers My Anxiety
A GON Reader Asks
It's amazing how different people are, including our own kids to each other and
to us. My son, Junior, is a meticulous planner. He wants to map out plans to the
minute. (See Junior's schedule above.) And within seconds of him doing that, it
triggers my anxiety. But he gets anxious if he doesn't have that. Some days and
moments, it's harder than others. Is there a way to help him get his security
without it making me anxious?
This Reader Question was submitted by:

Maria Gracia responds...
That's just adorable. Junior definitely feels the need to know what's coming
next in his life. When it's 11:36, for instance, Junior finds comfort in doing
what he scheduled at that time (go on computer). This just goes to show you that
everyone has their own goals and priorities.
You know, in your mind, that Junior doesn't REALLY have to go on his computer at
11:36. You know that if he doesn't, it's not going to be the end of the world.
He won't lose a job he doesn't have. The computer is not going to vanish into
thin air seconds after that time. You know that if he doesn't go to bed exactly
at 8P, that life will go on. And I'm sure it's frustrating to you (for example)
if a family movie you're watching goes past that 8:00P deadline, and he declares
that he's done...even if you (and the other family members if applicable)
This is likely where your anxiety with his schedule is stemming from. Because
you know that none of his tasks REALLY have to be done at the exact times he
has listed. And maybe, him doing this, is a sign that he's growing up. That's
a hard pill for any mom to swallow too.
Of course, as you already know, schedules are imperative in the real world in
most cases. When you're working for someone else, you generally have to be there
on specific days at specific times...or at least turn in whatever you're working
on by the deadline. When you have a family, kids have to be in school on
specific days at specific times. Events (concerts, gardening demonstrations,
doctor appointments, etc.) happen on specific days at specific times.
That all being said, at this time, Junior's schedule ALSO depends on YOUR
schedule, because if you have to be at work at a certain time, Junior may
not be able to stick to his schedule. So perhaps, to ease your own anxiety
over this, you can give him ranges of time for him to plan his tasks, as well
as ranges of time when he has to mark his schedule as 'flex time' (which
really means, 'Junior, you have to be flexible during flex time because Mom's
schedule is important too.')
Later on, Junior will see that having a schedule, and being flexible, are
both equally important time management skills to have in his life.
