Interview With . . . Patricia John Room 2 Room Organizing Oshawa, Ontario, Canada by Maria Gracia How long have you been in business? It has been a little over 2 years now. 2. Is this your primary business, or a part-time business? This is my full time and primary business. 3. Are you a member of NAPO? (Please indicate if you're an officer.) No, but I am a member of the POC. 4. Why did you become a professional organizer? I love to organize and I love to help people get organized so I thought that now that my children are in school (one full time the other one in first grade) that I will have more time as the years go by to put my energy and passion to work for something I love to do. I wanted to do this for me. I have wanted to do this for a very long time. 5. What type of organizing do you specialize in (home, office, etc.)? I organize homes, small ofices and schools. 6. Do you sell products, services, or seminars? Please describe. Organizing services only. 7. Have you written a book(s)? If so, what is the title(s)? No, but I would love to. It's always been a dream of mine to write a book. 8. Do you publish a newsletter? If so, is it a print newsletter, or an e-zine? Is it free, or is there a charge? Not at this time. 9. Do you have a web site? If so, what is the address? Yes, it's www.room2roomorganizing.com/ 10. Is travel a big part of your business? No, not really. 11. Who is your primary target audience? Families, teachers/school staff, home based businesses. 12. Describe your typical workday. It depends on the day. Monday, Wednesday and every other Friday, after dropping the kids off and if I don't have a project to do, I then get on the computer and check e-mail and do business related work. In the afternoon I do errands if needed. Tuesdays, Thursdays and every other Friday, I do business related stuff and then spend time with my daughter. Weekends are for my family. 13. Every person interested in entering the professional organizing field is wondering, "Can I make enough money doing this?" What is your outlook on this question? I think we can make money in this field however, as I am finding out, it takes time and effort to get your business reconized. I am hoping my new website, business cards and brochures will help. We have to let people know what we do and that we exist! 14. Which of the following marketing vehicles have you used to help you grow your business (direct mail, newspaper advertising, free workshops, radio, television, web site, e-zine, telemarketing, yellow pages, joint ventures with other professionals, publicity, other: please describe)? Newspaper advertising, joint ventures with other professionals as well as I have advertised in the Recreation guides for my area. Unfortunately, I didn't get too many calls from that. 15. Which one marketing technique have you found works the best for you? Please describe. Word of mouth from networking. 16. Describe a successful, creative marketing technique that you use, or that you've used in the past. None that I can think of. 17. Do you feel that networking plays a big role in growing your business? Yes, very important. 18. What do you do to generate referrals? I ask the clients if they would please pass on my name to friends and family. 19. What do you find to be the most exciting part of your business? The organizing and meeting new people. 20. What do you find to be the most frustrating part of your business? Not enough work. 21. Describe your greatest success in this field. Helping my big sister organize her kitchen and the wonderful feeling it gave me seeing how happy she was and how wonderful she felt about her new organized kitchen after we had finished! 22. As a professional organizer, do you have a funny story to share? No, but I'm sure I will as time goes by. 23. As an organizer, what professional organizing information or tools are you always on the lookout for? I am always trying to find new products that I can share with my clients. I love to be able to recommend something great to them. I like new storage ideas as well as ideas on how to organized something better. 24. Looking ahead, what do you see as your greatest challenge? Finding clients. My area is quite slow right now so I am really hoping it picks up soon. 25. What is your best tip for people interested in becoming professional organizers? Join the POC (Canada) or NAPO (United States). The people you meet from these organizations can teach you so much. I have met some great ladies and have made some wonderful friends.
