Interview With . . . Melissa Wiese Professional Organizers Unlimited Parker, CO by Maria Gracia 1. What is the name of your company? Where are you located? How long have you been in business? My name is Melissa Wiese, and I'm the owner of Professional Organizers Unlimited. We're located in Parker, CO and I've been in business for 4 Months. 2. Is this your primary business, or a part-time business? This is my primary business. 3. Are you a member of NAPO? (Please indicate if you're an officer.) No, but I'm considering joining. 4. Why did you become a professional organizer? It is my natural skill and I have always wanted to get into something I love doing! 5. What type of organizing do you specialize in (home, office, etc.)? I specialize in residential and small business. 6. Do you sell products, services, or seminars? Please describe. I give seminars to small businesses and do consulting for residential families. 7. Have you written a book(s)? If so, what is the title(s)? No. 8. Do you publish a newsletter? If so, is it a print newsletter, or an e-zine? Is it free, or is there a charge? No, I have not printed a newsletter yet. I am thinking about it, but don't know exactly what to put in it or who to send it to. 9. Do you have a web site? If so, what is the address? No, not yet, but it is being built. 10. Is travel a big part of your business? Yes, local travel is. 11. Who is your primary target audience? Stay at home mom's and home office businesses. 12. Describe your typical workday. Check e-mail, return calls, go out to customers and give quotes. Then, check e-mail, return calls, go to customer job and organize anywhere from 4 - 8 hours depending upon size of job. 13. Every person interested in entering the professional organizing field is wondering, "Can I make enough money doing this?" What is your outlook on this question? I think you can make a great deal of money if you put your heart and soul into it and if you love what you are doing! 14. Which of the following marketing vehicles have you used to help you grow your business (direct mail, newspaper advertising, free workshops, radio, television, web site, e-zine, telemarketing, yellow pages, joint ventures with other professionals, publicity, other: please describe)? Small local newspaper ads. I advertise on my vehicle. Lots of networking through certain committees (i.e., Chamber of Commerce, Denver Metropolitan Club etc. Leads Group). Women's Edition Magazine, Seminars, PTO Meetings and a great husband who tells all of his homeowners!! 15. Which one marketing technique have you found works the best for you? Please describe. All of the committees I am on and the Chamber is Great!! Small local papers seem to work okay. 16. Describe a successful, creative marketing technique that you use, or that you've used in the past. I think the marketing technique that has worked for me, is just being myself--people seem to like that! Word of mouth is the best! 17. Do you feel that networking plays a big role in growing your business? Absolutely! 18. What do you do to generate referrals? Follow-up works great for me! 19. What do you find to be the most exciting part of your business? Seeing results and making the customer happy! 20. What do you find to be the most frustrating part of your business? People not understanding what we do. 21. Describe your greatest success in this field. I just signed a big contract with a very large finance co. -- I will be organizing the entire finance department and giving several seminars over the next few weeks! I am very excited! 22. As a professional organizer, do you have a funny story to share? Not at this time. But I'm sure I will after I've been in the field a bit longer. 23. As an organizer, what professional organizing information or tools are you always on the lookout for? Newsletters with lots of information, such as the Get Organized Now!™ Organizers Newsletter. 24. Looking ahead, what do you see as your greatest challenge? I always could use more customers! 25. What is your best tip for people interested in becoming professional organizers? If you love it, do it! Do not wait!!!!
