Interview With . . .

Jeannie Triezenberg
Hire Order, Inc.
Naperville, IL
by Maria Gracia

1. What is the name of your company? Where are you located? How long have you been in business?

My name is Jeannie Triezenberg, and I own Hire Order, Inc.. We're located in Naperville, IL, which is 30 miles west of Chicago. I've been in business since 1998.

2. Is this your primary business, or a part-time business?

This is my primary business.

3. Are you a member of NAPO? (Please indicate if you're an officer.)

I am a member of NAPO and President of the Chicago Chapter, which has 47 members.

4. Why did you become a professional organizer?

I love helping other people find order in their lives and I love to organize!

5. What type of organizing do you specialize in (home, office, etc.)?

Both small business and residential, but probably a bit more of the home organizing. I also help with relocations, organizing before the move and after.

6. Do you sell products, services, or seminars? Please describe.

Hire Order is a service business. We sell the actual organizing process.Whether it is consulting, help getting started or the entire process from start to finish.

7. Have you written a book(s)? If so, what is the title(s)?

No book (yet).

8. Do you publish a newsletter? If so, is it a print newsletter, or an e-zine? Is it free, or is there a charge?

We are in the process of working on a newsletter. It will be free of charge.

9. Do you have a web site? If so, what is the address?

Yes, it's www.hireorder.com

10. Is travel a big part of your business?

I do travel, but it is not a big part of my business.

11. Who is your primary target audience?

The residential market is our primary target audience. Mostly women that need help organizing their lives between all the commitments of work, home, and family.

12. Describe your typical workday.

There is no typical day, that is what I love about organizing--the variety.

13. Every person interested in entering the professional organizing field is wondering, "Can I make enough money doing this?" What is your outlook on this question?

If you are willing to make the commitment you can make a living at it. It takes a lot of time and hard work. You cannot quit a full-time paying position today and make the same salary organizing tomorrow, you have to build your client base. There is a lot more to being a professional organizer than just organizing. If you want your own business, you can plan on spending as much time on the behind the scenes work as you do on organizing. If all you want to do is organize, then I recommend you find another organizer to work for.

14. Which of the following marketing vehicles have you used to help you grow your business (direct mail, newspaper advertising, free workshops, radio, television, web site, e-zine, telemarketing, yellow pages, joint ventures with other professionals, publicity, other: please describe)?

Hire Order has used direct mail, free workshops, television, Web site, yellow pages, joint ventures, networking groups, Chamber of Commerce. I also have a magnetic sign on my car to advertise.

15. Which one marketing technique have you found works the best for you? Please describe.

The networking group that I belong to is Ali Lassen’s Leads Club based out of Carlsbad, California. They have chapters worldwide. I meet with other business professionals once a week to promote our businesses and share in our success. You can find more information at www.leadsclub.com.

16. Describe a successful, creative marketing technique that you use, or that you've used in the past.

The local Chamber of Commerce has various home greeter programs that I have used beneficially.

17. Do you feel that networking plays a big role in growing your business?

We couldn’t survive without it!

18. What do you do to generate referrals?

I offer one hour of free organizing to clients that refer Hire Order to others.

19. What do you find to be the most exciting part of your business?

Every job is different and unique. The clients are so grateful for help in getting their space/lives organized.

20. What do you find to be the most frustrating part of your business?

Paperwork. Working 'on' the business as opposed to working 'in' the business.

21. Describe your greatest success in this field.

Being my own boss. And the gratification of owning a successful business that I created on my own.

22. As a professional organizer, do you have a funny story to share?

I have found a lot of bizarre and unique items during the course of organizing for clients, but I don't recall a particularly funny story.

23. As an organizer, what professional organizing information or tools are you always on the lookout for?

Containers and gadgets that help us organize ourselves and our clients.

24. Looking ahead, what do you see as your greatest challenge?

Avoiding the burnout that I see in other 'veteran' organizers.

25. What is your best tip for people interested in becoming professional organizers?

Join NAPO and read, read, read!
