Interview With . . . Janis Nylund Orderly Concepts and Solutions Vancouver ( Surrey ) B.C. Canada by Maria Gracia 1. What is the name of your company? Where are you located? How long have you been in business? My name is Janis Nylund and I own Orderly Concepts and Solutions. I'm located in Vancouver (Surrey) B.C. Canada and have been in business since May 2000. 2. Is this your primary business, or a part-time business? This is my primary business. 3. Are you a member of NAPO? (Please indicate if you're an officer.) No, I am a member of the Professional Organizers in Canada. 4. Why did you become a professional organizer? I saw Julie Morgenstern on Dateline or 48 Hours, one of those shows. It struck me that this could actually be a profession. I looked into it and then started my own business! 5. What type of organizing do you specialize in (home, office, etc.)? Residential and small business. I am also working with people who are building new homes, giving them ideas for organizational systems that can be built in to suit their lifestyles and family needs. 6. Do you sell products, services, or seminars? Please describe. Organizing services only at this time. 7. Have you written a book(s)? If so, what is the title(s)? Not at this time. 8. Do you publish a newsletter? If so, is it a print newsletter, or an e-zine? Is it free, or is there a charge? I will, in the near future. 9. Do you have a web site? If so, what is the address? In the near future. 10. Is travel a big part of your business? No, not at all. 11. Who is your primary target audience? Residential and small business. 12. Describe your typical workday. Every day is so different, I couldn't even describe each as typical. 13. Every person interested in entering the professional organizing field is wondering, "Can I make enough money doing this?" What is your outlook on this question? Depending on the area you live in or are targeting. It is still a very new thing here in Vancouver, but it is catching on! 14. Which of the following marketing vehicles have you used to help you grow your business (direct mail, newspaper advertising, free workshops, radio, television, web site, e-zine, telemarketing, yellow pages, joint ventures with other professionals, publicity, other: please describe)? Word of mouth is number 1. I have distributed brochures and business cards. Networking and vehicle advertising. Newspaper articles will be my next avenue. 15. Which one marketing technique have you found works the best for you? Please describe. Word of mouth and networking. People trust what other people have to say. 16. Describe a successful, creative marketing technique that you use, or that you've used in the past. I think that the news articles will be a good venture. 17. Do you feel that networking plays a big role in growing your business? Yes, for all of the reasons above. 18. What do you do to generate referrals? I try to use and promote other businesses services. 19. What do you find to be the most exciting part of your business? When a job has been completed, you can see the end results! 20. What do you find to be the most frustrating part of your business? When people think that they can get a quick fix. 21. Describe your greatest success in this field. Working for a business person who had misplaced 6 cheques that had 5 to 6 figures in each cheque. He was thrilled that I had found them, but disappointed that they had already expired for cashing in. 22. As a professional organizer, do you have a funny story to share? I don't know if it is very funny, but...I had worked so many residential jobs that had so many extra coffee makers, I couldn't remember whose coffee makers were whose! I had clients asking me where I put the extra coffee makers. I had to visualize each house to remember which one I was looking for. 23. As an organizer, what professional organizing information or tools are you always on the lookout for? Drawer organizers. Dollar stores have so many different varieties. 24. Looking ahead, what do you see as your greatest challenge? Building the niche to my business, gaining the clients for the residential construction side of my business. 25. What is your best tip for people interested in becoming professional organizers? Research your market first.
