Interview With . . . Amelia Herrera Amelia R. Herrera, Professional Organizer Nevada, CA by Maria Gracia 1. How long have you been in business? I just celebrated my business's one year anniversary. 2. Is this your primary business, or a part-time business? This is a part-time business for me. 3. Are you a member of NAPO? (Please indicate if you're an officer.) Not yet. I'm waiting to get more established in my area. 4. Why did you become a professional organizer? I have always loved to organize people's things and rooms. Growing up, I would always spend time organizing my friends rooms, rather than hanging out with them. I really feel that I can take this knack and turn it into success for disorganized people. 5. What type of organizing do you specialize in (home, office, etc.)? I specialize in homes, offices and garages. 6. Do you sell products, services, or seminars? Please describe. Not at this time. 7. Have you written a book(s)? If so, what is the title(s)? No, it's too early for me to do this yet. 8. Do you publish a newsletter? If so, is it a print newsletter, or an e-zine? Is it free, or is there a charge? Not currently. 9. Do you have a web site? If so, what is the address? Not yet. 10. Is travel a big part of your business? I wouldn't mind traveling if I had to, but I haven't traveled much so far. 11. Who is your primary target audience? People with busy lifestyles that don't have time to get organized on their own, but are willing to learn simple steps to stay organized once I initially help them out. I also aim to help busy businesses that need more function and direction. The key to helping a business is making sure it's benefiting the owners and more importantly, their customers. 12. Describe your typical workday. At this point, I don't have a definite schedule. I do things as I need to. 13. Every person interested in entering the professional organizing field is wondering, "Can I make enough money doing this?" What is your outlook on this question? I think it takes time to get established. Once people recognize the success you bring to people's lives they will refer you to others. I believe word of mouth is one of the key elements to any growing business. Being a professional organizer can be very rewarding if you are patient and persistent with your goals. 14. Which of the following marketing vehicles have you used to help you grow your business (direct mail, newspaper advertising, free workshops, radio, television, web site, e-zine, telemarketing, yellow pages, joint ventures with other professionals, publicity, other: please describe)? I've advertised in the business directory section of the local newspaper, The Union. I've created postcards and mailed them to target customers, and I plan on creating a website when my business picks up more. 15. Which one marketing technique have you found works the best for you? Please describe. I think creating a key target group or farm is key to success. Once you know this target you can send mail outs and monthly coupons as incentives. 16. Describe a successful, creative marketing technique that you use, or that you've used in the past. Definitely creating a key target group. 17. Do you feel that networking plays a big role in growing your business? Yes! 18. What do you do to generate referrals? I do good quality work. There's no other way for a customer to give referrals than if you do an awesome job on their home/office/garage. Once the word spreads that you are efficient and great at what you do, people will want to come to you! 19. What do you find to be the most exciting part of your business? I love what I do. Each customer has different needs and it's exciting to figure out how to incorporate the necessary tools for each individual. 20. What do you find to be the most frustrating part of your business? It is very slow starting out. 21. Describe your greatest success in this field. It allows me to have my own schedule and come and go as I please. 22. As a professional organizer, do you have a funny story to share? Can't say that I do right now! 23. As an organizer, what professional organizing information or tools are you always on the lookout for? New ideas and inspirations, always. 24. Looking ahead, what do you see as your greatest challenge? Keeping a balance between my current career and my professional organizing business. 25. What is your best tip for people interested in becoming professional organizers? Follow your heart!
