7 Ideas for Marketing Your Business With Free Newsletters

by Maria Gracia

Follow-up is so important when it comes to getting first-time and repeat customers. There are many ways to follow up with people--phone, e-mail, and so on. Another excellent idea is to send out free newsletters. Here are a few ideas:

1. CHOOSE YOUR METHOD. There are two common ways to deliver newsletters. You can either have a print newsletter which you simply mail out to people or you can have an e-mail newsletter, which you send out electronically. Both can be very effective in helping you to grow your business.

2. SHARE TIPS. When people receive your newsletter, they make a split second decision about whether to immediately trash it, or actually take the time to read it. The newsletters that have the greatest chance of readership are those that have lots of helpful tips and ideas inside.

3. MAKE OFFERS. Of course, you're not only in the business of supplying people with free tips. So, be sure to include an appropriate offer in your newsletter. You can print your offer right into the newsletter, or you can insert a flyer describing your offer inside the newsletter.

4. DON'T HAVE TIME? OUTSOURCE. Perhaps you don't have time to write a newsletter. That's ok. There are many companies that will sell you articles, or allow you to reprint articles.

5. SEND YOUR NEWSLETTERS OFTEN. It is important that you send your newsletters out as often and consistently as possible. Send your newsletters out a minimum of once every two months. Every month is better of course, since people will begin to remember you after seeing your newsletters a few times. Of course, if you can do it more often than once a month, your message will be seen more consistently.

6. MAKE IT LOOK PROFESSIONAL. Your newsletters should be easy to read, without any distractions. Use no more than one or two fonts. Use fonts that are easy to read, such as Times New Roman, no smaller than size 11. Don't print text on busy backgrounds. Use upper and lowercase letters; avoid using all capital letters for large blocks of text.

7. THINK COST-EFFECTIVE. It is not necessary to have your newsletters printed in expensive color, or on very costly paper stock. Your content and your offers are what count. Simple black ink on white stock will keep the possibility of sending regular newsletters within your budget.
