GON Organizing for Men
Organizing for Men Men: Get and Stay Organized for Your Health. Here’s how… We’re all so busy...bills to pay, family to care for, people to keep in touch with, plans to make, chores to do. It’s no wonder that health often plays second fiddle. But think about it? Your health and well- being affects nearly everything in your life. You’ve heard it before. Active participation in your health gives you the very best opportunity to get and stay healthy for yourself and your loved ones. 1. Get to the doctor. Schedule a routine physical today and get all health screenings recommended for your age . Don’t wait until something doesn’t “feel right” to see a doctor. It’s better to avoid problems in the first place than fix them once they arise. Keep this in mind, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” 2. Get movin’. The human body is meant to move, not sit at a desk all day. This may sound super challenging, but according to the CDC (Center of Disease Control), adults should get 2 ½ hours of moderate-intense aerobic activity and 2 days of strength training each week. Keep this in mind… o gyms offer classes now that incorporate both strength training and aerobic activity into one class o 2 ½ hours broken down into 7 days is just 27 minutes If necessary, start small even if it’s just a 15 minute walk each day. You can always work your way up to exercising more. Some suggestions on aerobic activity include: bike riding, walking, pushing a lawnmower, working in the garden, trimming branches, etc. 3. Clean up your eating habits. Diet is key when it comes to your health. The less healthy you eat, the less healthy you’ll be. Eat fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean meats. Limit your intake of sugar, oils, and sodium. By the way, processed sugar is found in products like soda, beer, juices, breakfast cereals, bottled spaghetti sauces, bread, and BBQ sauce. Enjoy these types of things once in awhile; not every day. 4. Shut eye counts. Guys, you need your sleep! Avoid the “late, late, late shows” and instead head to bed. The average adult needs 7-9 hours of sleep a night, but generally only receives 4-6 hours. If you have trouble sleeping, contact your doctor. They will be able to help you catch those ZZZZZs. 5. Say good-bye to tobacco. Quitting smoking has immediate AND long-term benefits. If you can’t quit on your own, get help from a doctor. 6. Practice relaxation techniques. Do Yoga, or not. But whatever you do, don’t go through life being stressed out. Take walks to free your mind, go dancing with your better half, put your cell phone away for a few hours a day if your non-working hours are always being interrupted, find the time to read a good book in a relaxing setting, and practice other stress-relieving tactics.
