Organizing Challenge Here are 5 mini challenges to organize your communication 1. Where are your eyes? When you’re having a conversation with someone, are you looking directly into their eyes or out the window? Eye contact conveys interest in what someone has to say to you, and if you’re not looking at the person, it screams “disinterest and distraction.” Next conversation you have, really look at the person you’re talking with. If making constant eye contact is difficult, look away once in a while or switch between which eye you’re looking at. 2. Are you listening for sound, or content? You can’t hear (or understand) what someone has to say if you’re speaking all the time...or simply thinking of the next thing you want to say. An effective communicator is a good speaker and a good listener as well. Listen to others, not only for sound but also for content. Ask questions. Comment on what they’re saying. It shows that you respect them, and that they have something important to say. 3. Yeah, but...Interrupting others breaks the flow of the conversation. If you notice you’re about to interrupt, try to hold off what you were going to say, even if it’s for just a few moments. Allow the other person to get his or her full thought out. 4. What about body language? Hand gestures, posture, and facial expressions all convey your attitude and level of interest in a conversation. Using simple hand gestures, or just nodding your head once in a while all indicate you’re interested in the other person. Don’t forget to smile, whenever appropriate. It makes you more approachable. 5. Don’t beat around the bush. If you have something important to say, think it through, and then say it. People aren’t mind readers. If you expect them to be mind readers, then expect you’re not going to be understood a good percentage of the time.
