My Life - My Organizing Stories Behind the steering wheel and staying productive When I’m not working, I spend a whole lot of time in my car. During that time, I’m either driving my daughter (and her friends frequently) to an activity, back from an activity, or I’m waiting in the car for an activity to finish. If you’re a mom or dad (or a grandma or grandpa), you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about. That being said, I try to make my time in the car productive. Here are 3 things I do: 1. I always have reading material with me. Whether it’s something I received in the mail, a novel I would like to complete before meeting my friends for book club, or catching up on some business or personal magazines, I always have a stash (or electronic access from a tablet) in my vehicle. When I’m waiting in my parked car, I can always make good use of waiting time! 2. I use my navigation system to locate supermarkets, gas stations, etc. I try to always get “something else” done when out driving, whether that is stopping at a supermarket for some groceries, getting fuel for the car at the gas station (I use this time to clean any trash out of the car as well), or going to the post office. So when I’m out, if I’m unfamiliar with the area, my navigation system can easily find stores, restaurants, gas stations, etc. I use the one installed in my car…but there are also many smart phone apps available if needed. Of course, always pull over when looking anything up unless you have a voice-activated, hands-free navigation system. 3. I use the opportunity to talk to my daughter. Some of the best conversations I’ve had with my daughter have taken place in the car. We spend a lot of time together driving back and forth from swimming practice, track meets, etc. and we talk about everything…school, dreams, goals, possible trips and more. It’s wonderful bonding time!
