I know we've discussed removing shoes at the door- which seems to be related to areas of the country. My question today is what do you do with the piles of shoes that are at the door? What are some ways that have worked to keep them from being a mess.

I have seen some people have baskets to put them in and a basket of new, clean slippers to offer to people to wear if they want.

We installed a cafe curtain rod [any 1/2" - 3/4" rod will do] which was at hand a few inches above the baseboard in the closet, high enough so that DH's shoes could suspend by the heel.
We keep a plastic, Dollar Store shoe box of knit slippers at the door. My SIL loves to knit and buys yarn at GW or charity outlets when they hold their sales. She uses up partial skeins so we get pretty colorful 'booties.'
Last summer we found a sell-out of 'one size fits all' hotel style 'mule' slippers and bought a box. We set those out if we expect more than 8 guests. People are welcome to take them or we throw them out.

Actually I meant for family shoes. The family leaves their shoes at the door. Take four people and you'll soon have 20 pairs at the door. What do you do with those?

Oh, Lea, you are bringing back memories of my old house.
4 of us taking off shoes in our entry foyer which was one very pretty room before going upstairs.
I finally found a five shelf, wide shoe rack that fit behind the front door, actually I think it was a media rack (for VCR's ?) with slanted slats. Still had some stragglers, but not 20 pairs to trip over.

I like a cubby/basket system by the door. It works for shoes, gloves, and other accessories. Dry shoes can go into the baskets (lined with shelf paper or newspaper) and wet shoes can dry off on a rack or boot tray.

There are shelves you can buy which are perfect for storing shoes if there aren't too many people in the home. In our house we had a lot of kids and they didn't leave their shoes at the door, they had to take them off and up to their room. Just the adults used the door shelf. LOL

I found an excellent adjustable shoe rack that fits the width of the hall closet, but we still end up with some shoes outside since they are one thing I do put down rather than putting away, alas!

I did finally find the perfect shoe storage for this situation. It is a floor to ceiling tension rod that holds 36 pairs of shoes in 12 inches of space. Nice!
