I have a ton of worn out bath towels and washcloths. I am going to deal with the surplus later but want to avoid that problem in the future. The bathroom that I use is getting a total facelift. I don't want to end up with a ton of towels again. I am the only one who uses this bath unless we have guests. We don't typically have more than two guests at one time.

I am thinking of having 4 total bath towels, 2-4 hand towels, and 6 or 8 washcloths. Does this sound reasonable? Is there a good rule of thumb for this?

I used 2 bath towels for 4 years. They are both still in good condition. I had 4 handtowels and a dozen wash cloths. I recently painted my bathroom and redecorated. I have more towels now but I took a few from DHs bathroom so they match my current colors. We do not use a clean towel each day so they last longer that way.

I bought 3 2packs of white towels and 1 6pack of washcloths; three years ago, they are easy to lauder, add bleach from time to time and they are still looking brand new. I had colored towels for years but didn't like the faded look so when I moved to my apartment I thought all white would look better, longer.

I buy hand towels on sale, different colors, easy to switch with holiday decor or to adjust to my mood! I think I have 5 of them.

I watch place like Tuesday Morning, Marshall's, HomeGoods, TJMaxx for clearance sales.

After years of colored towels that faded like Bubblegum's did, I went to all white

I have 8 each of bath towels, hand towels and wash cloths, and since i use the nylon sponge in the tub, I have too many wash cloths! I bought these towel about 7 years ago and we also use the bath towels multiple times since they only dry the water off from a shower. Hand towels are used a lot and switched out every few days.

I love the large beach towels for a shower, and had a few of those. I think 4-5 towels are enough, hand towels just for decorative purposes (use paper towels in the bathroom, eliminates germs and passing germs) wash cloths, same amount.

Thanks, all! I went with four towels and wash cloths and two hand towels. I will see how it works. I usually use inexpensive towels because we always saved the good towels for "nice". "Nice" didn't visit so now I have a couple of generations of stuff we were saving for nice. Not going to do that anymore but it is hard for me to use new, good and/or nice stuff.

I think many of us were brought that way-with nice things that were used for company & lesser things that were used for family. At some point, I decided that I deserved nice things, too. I hope you will enjoy the nice stufff.
