I had about 3000 emails each in my work inbox and sent folders. Pretty much everything I needed to save since I started working at this new job back in May.
On Friday, I said to myself, I really need to delete a bunch of that stuff, maybe I'll do it over the weekend. On Saturday, I thought about it and said, I don't want to do work stuff on my day off, I'll deal with it later.
Well, much to my dismay, I got up this morning and they're ALL GONE. The email server maxed out on my box and dumped them all. I contacted our head tech guy and they don't back up the individual accounts.
Am I a bit upset? Yes. Will the world come to an end? No. It's definitely going to make life difficult for the next few weeks. I had a lot of attachments in there that I had opened but not saved so I will need to find another way to get those. I'm doing my best not to envision how much of a pain this is.
I told my boss this morning, it's not like standing in the middle of the room and screaming will do any good so I'll try and take a calmer approach.
Bottom line, I shouldn't have waited and wouldn't have if I had any idea that could happen. The point is, we never know when something like that will happen so if you need to do something like that...do it!

(((HHHUGGSS)))) I totally understand! I wish that there was something that I could to to help.
While screaming may not help the situation, it does a lot to relieve stress. Maybe a bubble bath?
Lesson learned, now don't beat yourself. You can use that energy in finding a solution.

OMG, I didn't know they could do things like that without advance notification. I'm so sorry you've had such a blow and very much appreciate the head's up.
i don't know what I'd do in such a situation...go to bed, pull the covers over my head and refuse to talk to anyone until I could calm down.

That was always one of my fears, so I deal with them as soon as I possibly can, especially attachments that I might need later. I get laughed at, but I don't care.
Sam, I'm really proud of you for not standing in the middle of the room and screaming. That IS exactly what I would do first.

Wow--I have 13,000 emails (many w/attachments) but when I check my email provider I have only used a small amount of the capacity I'm allowed. 3,000 doesn't sound like that much to me! To have them delete it w/no warning is very strange.--Suzy
Though I'm trying to do the email toss-like 100 per day, if possible. After hand surgery a couple days ago I'm not able to type much but my pain has decreased a lot!!! On morphine before surgery--nothing now as far as pain meds. Have to keep hand elevated or I notice it turns blue!

Suzy, the decreased pain! AWESOME!!! Blue hand, not so much. I hope the swelling and circulation resolve quickly... and I'm so happy for the lessened pain!!

I don't quite scream, but when my computer doesn't behave, I have shouted sometimes. It's my way of letting off steam without throwing it out the window. ChefSam, I feel for you, and commend you on your self-control. I hope you will be able to reconstruct some of what you lost.
The other day, I backed up some documents I'd been working on for taxes. I should do it again soon. I think we sometimes tend to hold off on that because we know we will be modifying a document soon, anyway. We think, "I'll wait til it's complete." Well, replacing part of a doc. is easier than redoing all of it.
I can see how ChefSam might have 3,000 e-mails, because it's related to her job. I cannot imagine 13,000 e-mails; I'd think the system would crash, or at least run out of room. More to the point, how can you deal with so many.
I eliminated a couple hundred today. Most I delete as soon as read; some I keep a while for reference. The Toastmasters ones grow like weeds, so I regularly cull them. Without those, I'd have significantly fewer. It gives me a good feeling to be "lean and mean."
Suzy, I'm glad things are going better for you.
