Yup, never put tomatoes in the fridge. They lose their flavor that way.

Chef...I find with store bought tomatoes that you can't tell the difference. Have you noticed that they have no tomato smell or taste? I remember when I had a garden they were so fragrant! I'm going to have to try some container gardening and put some tomato plants in this year...I just miss the taste and smell.

If you don't put tomatoes in the fridge, what do you do with the remaining part? I like tomato in my salad or on a sandwich, but rarely do I use the whole tomato.

I was referring to prior to cutting it.

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I usually don't put them in until I cut them. I have also found the best place to put them is in a compartment on the door. I think I may have read that somewhere.

I love these bags. The trick is to make sure there is no moisture build-up in them. After storing lettuce for a few days, I either wipe out the bag with a paper towel, or simply turn it inside out and replace the lettuce (or whatever) into the dry bag. I purchased mine at Walgreens. They are washable and last quite a long time.

My problem with produce is "out of sight, out of mind." So, I decided to reverse things a bit and put all pickles, olives, relishes, and various other jars into the produce drawer. That leaves an entire shelf for my veggies and I am forced to see them and hopefully use them right away.

I believe using the "green bags" keeps things fresher also.

That's a great suggestion Margeincharge. I love it when we organize by thinking outside the box!

I remember to use my produce because I begin my grocery shopping list by taking an inventory of what is on hand. Any fresh produce already purchased gets planned into the first few meals coming up- however, if you buy produce for snacking, that system doesn't work. If you can't see it, you'll forget it.
