I store ours in a DVD binder because I was sick of cleaning up the DVDs that DS always dumped off the shelf!! so far they haven't scratched any of our disks. I have 2 binders - one for the kids DVD's and one for ours. They both hold 75 I think. They are zippered so my little terror can't open it!!

DH sees the original cases as critical important collection mass, and collectible. We were able to rip a lot to our portables, but we still use the cds at home on our stereo. He said something about the sound quality, and ripping isn't as good. Whatever, I'm not fussy! We did buy a really pretty case, and he buys great music for me, so I don't mind!
Before we bought the case, I was thinking of installing a high narrow shelf, near ceiling height - I think they would look great, and we'd be able to access them as needed. But then I think books and albums are art....
jenn6903, I don't have kids so I don't have the security issue - but your kids are cute as buttons, so it's clearly worth it!

Ours are stored in their original cases - DH eventually sells many of his, so having the original case/notes is important. If your collection is strictly for your use and that's not important to you, the binders may be a better solution.
We had a spare closet and installed floor ot ceiling shelving spaced just for CD's and it workes great.

I finally got sick of the cases, and purchased the vinyl holders and tossed all the cases. I did this last year, and I have one binder for each type of music: Christmas, Classical, Modern, etc. Saved me a ton of space and can add to it as I purchase more or get rid of some without causing a big mess. I did keep the papers that went into the cases, so I would know exactly what was on it. Before I purchased the binders, I figured out how many types of music I had and how large a holder I would need for each category. I also made a master list of each type of music on the computer and printed it out, so I knew what all I had and where.
If I intend to sell any, I can just add it to a jewel case and it wouldn't matter. IMHO Hope this helps.

I have music discs in small wallets by category (easily expandable at $1 each!), and we have a large binder for DVDs. No problems with scratching at this point, but our kids are well-trained in disc handling, so that has something to do with it.

Currently have everything in their original jewel cases...both music and dvds. Will evaluate what to do when we move. I am thinking getting a number of binders for the movies and having a master list at the front of each book....that is if DH can let himself part with the jewel cases!

I have all of my cd's in a binder - in my car...but dh really likes to be able to see the movies at a glance, so they are stored in their original cases on racks on either side of the entertainment center. The racks keep them pretty well contained and while I think it's a bit of visual clutter, it isn't "cluttery" enough for me to try to change his mind...so we keep them visual.
God bless, Bonnie

Bonnie- I can relate to the feeling of visual clutter. Our current TV stand has shelves on the sides (not in the front) and DH has stored DVD's there. When I walk by and see them, they do seem busy and cluttery, but fortunately you don't see them head on when you're watching TV. ------------------------ We've got an idea of the type of entertainment center we want someday - it doesn't hurt to dream, right? ... now, to win the lottery!
