![]() July, 2008 ____ July 1 Finalize your plans for the 4th. If you are having a family picnic, made a few reminder calls to family members who are contributing items to the picnic. They'll appreciate the reminder and you'll rest easier knowing everything is covered. ____ July 2 Make sure you have plenty of extra towels and flip-flops for your guests at your pool party. There are always guests who forget and it’s nice to be able to grab from a basket filled and ready. Extra flip- flops protect bare feet from sticks and stones in the yard. ____ July 3 If you are spending the 4th at the beach, take time today to gather together all of your equipment and supplies. Load them into a basket to minimize the number of trips back and forth from car to beach spot. ____ July 4 Take time today to remember why we celebrate Independence Day. If you are fortunate enough to live in the Boston area, or are visiting, be sure to visit some of the sites pertaining to the Tea Party, Paul Revere’s home, The Old North Church and so on. If you have Internet access, and aren't in the Boston area, you can still visit these places virtually. ____ July 5 Check your garden for flowers and plants that need to be trimmed and thinned out. Deadhead your plants and cut back diseased or yellowed foliage. Your plants will appreciate the extra attention, and you will be rewarded with even more flowers and beautiful foliage. ____ July 6 Now is a good time to plant your flowering fall bulbs. If you store your spring bulbs over the winter, now is a good time to dig those up and store them inside. ____ July 7 Prune your rosebushes and cut off flowers as they brown to promote new flowers. Fertilize your rose bushes and check for diseases to treat as needed. Prune your climbing flowers, vines and rose bushes at this time too. ____ July 8 Your herb garden should be in full swing. The more you use the herbs, the more you'll have to use. Freeze or dry those herbs you can't use so that you'll have them to use long past the growing season. ____ July 9 Check the tire pressure in your car tires and make sure they are at recommended levels. Check your fluid levels on the car and adjust as necessary. ____ July 10 If you own an above ground pool, make sure that all ladders have been removed when the pool isn't being used, and use is supervised by an adult. Also check to make sure that all parts are securely fastened. ____ July 13 Check to be sure that there is a sufficient amount of sand or other cushioned material like mulch or wood chips under the swing set to cushion any falls and absorb the shock. ____ July 14 Take a break from the heat and take in a movie in an air conditioned theater. Many theaters offer matinees that are suitable for children, and make for a great family outing, without spending a lot of money, especially if everyone avoids buying snacks from the concession stands. ____ July 15 Now is a good time to schedule a chimney cleaning, before the burning season begins. You should find it easier to schedule this now rather than during early fall. ____ July 16 When was the last time you cleaned your coffee maker? Run a pot of white vinegar through a brew cycle. It won't take very long and you'll remove mites that can contribute to allergy problems. ____ July 20 Arrange for a sitter and take a ME day. Use this day to do whatever feels like pampering. Now is a good time to get them professionally cleaned. You will love going into fall with nice clean carpets. ____ July 26 Do you have a child going off to college in the fall. Before you know it, it will be time to get them settled into the dorm or apartment. Start now if you haven't already, gathering together all the things they will need to get settled in for school. ____ July 27 Summer is by no means over and that usually means pests. Take time to inspect your home for evidence of pests. If you prefer, you can make an appointment with a pest control company and have them come out and inspect, and treat if necessary, for pests. ____ July 28 Remember the taste of homemade ice cream? Not many tastes compare. Treat yourself and the kids to some delicious homemade ice cream. There are many different types of ice cream makers available, from the simple--a ball you put the ingredients into and roll around--to many styles of electric.
