There's a different organizing suggestion for you to do every day of the month--all easy, down-to-earth, and no thinking 'what should I do?' required. When the month changes, so does our checklist. Toss old/outdated food, wipe down the interior with a baking soda solution. Rinse with warm water. Combine condiments in one basket, lunch items in another basket and so on. ____ Aug 2 Have the kids try on clothes. Pass down those you can and donate the remaining outgrown items. This gives you a basis to start your back to school shopping. ____ Aug 3 College students will benefit from knowing ahead of time what you expect. Take time to go over a communication plan. Discuss with your student what your expectations are as well as what their expectations are. Chances are this transition year will be less stressful. ____ Aug 4 Update your calendar. It's a good thing to have a central calendar that lists where everyone has to be, in one location. There is much less chance of missed appointments, practices and rehearsals if everyone records their schedule in one place. ____ Aug 5 Do you have a wood fireplace? Now is the time to schedule a cleaning before fireplace season arrives and before the sweeps' schedules fill up. ____ Aug 6 Take a look around your home and take care of any paint touch ups that need to be done. ____ Aug 7 Check out the offerings at your local library. Check out a book from a section you usually don't frequent. You may be surprised at how much enjoyment you've been missing. ____ Aug 8 Time to get rid of those sticky notes of phone numbers all over the place. Transfer the information into your electronic address book. ____ Aug 9 Clean out one junk drawer in your kitchen. Toss out any items not useful and put those items that belong elsewhere where they belong. ____ Aug 10 Do you have pets? Make sure they are up to date on their immunizations and exams. The prices on pens, paper, pencils and so on are great right now. ____ Aug 12 Clean out your car trunk. Put all items that found their way into your trunk where they belong. ____ Aug 13 Take a plate of homemade cookies to your local fire station as a way of saying thank you. ____ Aug 14 Use a soft brush and a light touch to dust off your lamp shades. You'll be surprised at how much more light they give off. ____ Aug 15 Touch base with a friend you haven't talked with in awhile. You'll both enjoy touching base again. Take them in for a sharpening. ____ Aug 17 Check all of the filters in your home like air conditioner, furnace, water, etc and change out those in need of changing. Make sure you keep a record of the size and model number of the filters to make it easier to buy replacements. ____ Aug 18 Declare it family movie night. Pop a big bowl of popcorn, pick a movie the whole family can enjoy and gather the troops for movie night. ____ Aug 19 Still have photographs in envelopes? Spend an hour sorting through. Toss bad photos, share duplicates and store the rest in photo boxes. You can also scan them and store them on the computer or on a disk. ____ Aug 20 Take time to go through your pantry. Check expiration dates on dry goods like mixes. Cake mixes, muffin mixes and baking mixes don't' last much beyond the expiration date. Make a plan to use them up if they are nearing their dates. ____ Aug 21 Check for gift cards that have been tucked away. Combine them with a sale and get even more for you 'money'. ____ Aug 22 Give your houseplants a good misting outside to remove dust from the surface. They will appreciate the easier breathing. ____ Aug 23 Have a tangle of bicycles in your garage? Install wall mounted bike racks to get them off the floor and out of the way. ____ Aug 24 Do you have library books at home? Check the due dates. If you aren't finished and the due date is closing in, you can call and renew the book. Be sure to make note of the new due date. ____ Aug 25 Clean all of the mirrors in your home. ____ Aug 26 Do you have flashlights by each bed for use in a power outage? If not, put one by each bed. If you do, check to make sure the batteries are working. ____ Aug 27 Explore an area in your town that you haven't yet. There are likely some great areas that you have yet to discover. Check out a museum with the family. Get all your papers organized once and for all, in an organized (find-anything-you-need-in-a-second) filing system. You’ll be the envy of your friends! If you don't have an emergency supply kit, now would be a great time to do some research on the internet for content suggestions and put one together. ____ Aug 30 Finalize your Labor Day plans. ____ Aug 31 Remove everything from the top of your coffee table, clean it and only put back what belongs there.
