Simple and Effective Ways to Reduce Your Overall SpendingIt doesn't hit you right away; in fact, many people go for years before they realize that their money is gone before they get a chance to see it. If this sounds like you, you're not alone. Daily habits like the morning hot latte, lunch bought out and take-out for dinner just a couple of times per week can really add up. The good news is that there are so many great ways to start saving money from apps for coupons to vacationing at home that will get you back on track and let you start seeing some of that hard earned cash. Consider buying used itemsFor many people, a new car is a must have. But, if you think about it, you receive no tax deductions and the insurance premiums are actually higher because of the value. Instead, why not purchase a pre-owned, pre-certified car. These are generally vehicles that come off of 2-year leases where they are not only well-maintained but also have very low mileage. You'll pay less and save on things like the registration, excise tax and insurance. Another place to score big on bargains is a yard sale. For the most part, people tend to put out quality items that they no longer need like tables, chairs, paintings, cribs, dressers and clothing. Generally, people organize them for the weekends to attract a bigger crowd, so check your local flyer or newspaper for the date and time. Pay less for cable, gas and electricIt wasn't too long ago that you had to accept the fact that there was only one gas and electric company and one cable service provider in your area. Whatever their rates were, you were at their mercy. Today, that's all changed. With the deregulation of electric and gas, you now have multiple companies to choose from. It's important to take the time and look closely at your bill and then compare it with others to make sure you are getting the best deal. The same goes for your cable bill. You no longer have to settle. Companies are not all the same. For instance, you can save even more with DIRECTV Specials and similar promotions offered by other cable providers as well. Decide which channels you enjoy the most and then contact the different companies to see who can offer the best monthly rate. Cell phoneIf you walk down any busy street, department store or park you'll see nearly every adult and teenager with a cell phone in tow. These electronic devices make life easier in so many ways. You can make and receive calls, text, take pictures, explore the internet and play games. But, this wonderful invention can become quite expensive. Here there are two sure ways to reduce your bill drastically. One, if you own your cell phone you can sign up for any plan with any company and two you can choose to use companies that offer pre-paid minutes. This allows you to keep track of your monthly phone bill and avoid overage charges completely. Vacationing at homeGoing to Bermuda, the Bahamas and Disney World are all great places to have lots of fun. However, if it's not really in the cards this year to spend money on a vacation, why not try a staycation. This is something that many families and singles are catching onto. You can still have lots of fun and enjoy your downtime, but instead of having airfare and hotel fees, you plan activities at home and in your community. The key is to plan ahead just like you would for a vacation away from home, this way the family gets excited and every day has a unique experience waiting. Energy-efficientThere are numerous ways to quickly turn your home energy-efficient and save big on your utilities. Start by upgrading your thermostat to a programmable one, replace regular light bulbs with LEDs or CFLs, add insulation to older doors and windows and replace your air filter on your heating and cooling system often. If you're in the market for a new appliance make sure to select one with the EnergyStar rating on the front. With many of these purchases, you can also enjoy a tax deduction, giving your double the savings. You don't have to stop living to save money; you just need to learn to live smart. Bring your coffee and lunch to work, order out less frequently and compare prices on everything. With a little time invested, you can get the things you want, live a comfortable lifestyle and save on your monthly expenses.
