Believe it or not, being organized can help with that. Routine maintenance, accident prevention and emergency preparedness are all by-products of an organized home and good health. Below you will find some solutions that are borne of good organizing and also lead to good health. 1. Home Records: When you keep good records, information is easily accessible. Being organized means that you store and keep track of important house documents, manuals and warranties. At your fingertips you can find facts about your property, house structure and its systems. For example, if you know when your furnace was installed and how often it has been serviced, you are more likely to keep your family healthy because you are properly maintaining it. An improperly maintained furnace can lead to carbon monoxide leaks into your home. This is something that all of us need to avoid. 2. Personal Healthy Records: Keeping a personal health record of each family member is not only a good idea, it can give you peace of mind in the event of an emergency. Keep track of your physicians and specialists and their phone numbers, allergies of each family member, medications and reactions, illnesses and diseases, broken bones, etc. Keep your personal health records near the telephone so that you don't have to go searching for them in the event of a middle-of-the-night emergency. This will not only benefit your family members where their own health is concerned, it will also benefit them if something should happen to you and you are unable to talk with a physician or emergency medical technician. 3. Clutter Can Cause Illness: Many of us have seen the shows on television that show the seriousness of being a hoarder. We are all amazed at the clutter and resulting health issues that have come about due to the clutter. In addition to toxic mold, animal droppings have been found. Both toxic mold and animal droppings can cause serious and even life threatening illnesses. Most of us don't have to deal with clutter that leaves only a tiny pathway through our homes. But small rodents can make nests and leave droppings in even a small amount of clutter. They just love chewing their way into cardboard boxes. Toxic mold can form anywhere there is any kind of moisture buildup. The resulting illness from either of these conditions is one that we want to avoid. 4. Relieve Stress: Do you get all tensed up when you can't find or do something because of the clutter? You can't find your car keys so you are late to work, or you can't cut up vegetables for a meal because of the clutter on the counters? All of these problems lead to stress, which leads to numerous health problems. Having a place for everything and everything in its place leads to less stress. Having room to perform routine tasks leads to less stress. When you have less stress, you have fewer health problems. 5. Stop The Sneezing: Do you have a house that is chock full of knick knacks or bric-a-brac? Every one of these items needs to be dusted regularly. Letting that task go because it is so overwhelming is just asking for allergy problems. If you can't bear to part with any of your decorative items, pack some away for now and then rotate them out. You will have a manageable level of items to dust and cut down on allergy problems. Also by rotating out your collection, you will always have fresh looking decor in your home. ----- FALL IS HERE... THE PERFECT SEASON AND THE PERFECT REASON TO GET ORGANIZED! If you truly want to get organized, I highly urge you to pick up a copy of my book, Finally Organized, Finally Free--for the Home, or for the Office, or both. They contain what you need for you to enjoy an organized, stress-free life! ORGANIZE YOUR HOME: Are you sick and tired of the clutter, the mountains of paper, the overloaded email inbox, the lack of time you have to enjoy yourself, and the general disorganization in your life? If so, you won't want to miss this. Visit: http://www.getorganizednow.com/foffhome.html ORGANIZE YOUR OFFICE: Are you up to your eyeballs in work at the office? Are the paper mountains growing everywhere you look? Do you want to get your projects and tasks done quicker, with less effort, so you have more time to get home and enjoy your family and friends? If so, you won't want to miss this. Visit: http://www.getorganizednow.com/foffoffice.html ----- 6. Simplify and Re-Use: The latest buzz word is ‘green’. You can be green in your home without going to a lot of expense AND eliminate the potentially hazardous chemicals that come with commercial cleaners. Use vinegar as your multi-purpose cleaner. Vinegar can be used for laundering clothes, cleaning windows, softening skin in the bath and keeping fleas away when you put a small amount in your cat’s water. Using vinegar to clean also gives you peace of mind if you have small children who put everything in their mouths--unlike commercial cleaners or soaps, vinegar won't make your little one sick. 7. Medication Confusion: Can't remember when you took your medications? Took too many? Too few? There is a very simple solution that avoids these issues. Pick up a pill sorter at your local drugstore. They come in a variety of sizes and each day has a compartment for AM and a compartment for PM pills. Taking medication at the wrong time or in incorrect dosages or in combination with some other drugs can lead to sickness and could potentially be life threatening. The simple step of organizing your pills in a pill sorter can help you avoid possible life threatening problems and keep you in good health. 8. Meeting Yourself Coming and Going: Whether it is just you, you and a spouse, or you and a spouse and children, the stress of getting everyone everywhere they need to be at the time they need to be there can be overwhelming. We all know how stress affects our health and it isn't positive. Keep an activity calendar for every member of the family. Assign a different color ink for each member and write every activity and time down on it so there is no doubt about who has to be where when. This may not alleviate all of the stress but it will alleviate a lot of it. It will also give you pause to see if you really want to continue in so many activities, especially if family time is being sacrificed. 9. Do you have an aging parent with you? If so, you may be dealing with early stages of Alzheimer’s Disease. If so, organizing an go a long way to help ease some of the stress and frustration. To help with routine things, take time to write out the steps required. For instance; for Take A Bath you could list, get clean clothes, fill the tub with water, dry off, get dressed (depending on how advanced the disease is). Repetition is also something that can reduce the frustration and confusion of the patient. By organizing for this through detailed steps and repetition, or keeping furniture or their personal belongings in the same place every day there is less stress and frustration for both the patient and the care giver. 10. Routines: It sounds so simple and yet so many of us resist them! But the truth is that when we have routines in place, and follow them we are much less likely to be stressed out and short-tempered. For instance, most of us would do well to establish a nightly routine to help us get ready for the morning. Plan to take time after dinner to make lunches for the next day, to set out clothes for the next day, to set the table for breakfast (provided you don't have curious cats!) and so forth. By taking the time to get these few things done in the evening you will have a much more relaxed morning. Less stress equals better health. ============================================ NEW STUFF AND SITE UPDATES Everything below is accessible by visiting: http://www.getorganizednow.com Please note that we update our site on a weekly basis, so the new stuff and site updates below may only be available for one week. ** Get Organized Now! Visit: http://www.getorganizednow.com/orderdet.html ============================================ AN ORGANIZING TIP FROM ONE OF OUR READERS Last Christmas, my mother was so disorganized trying to find what she had purchased for each of the people on her list. She kept calling me at various points throughout the year saying, 'I finally found your gift' or 'Well now I remember what I bought your sister.' She also would forget that she had bought something for someone and would proceed to spend more than she could afford trying to make sure she got through her list. Last year I helped her buy 4-5 inexpensive totes and labeled them 'husband' 'child 1 and husband', 'child 2', 'neighbors', and 'extra'. She put these totes in her closet and when she found a present for someone in her category she put it in the appropriate bin. She didn't overbuy because she could see who she had and had not bought something for. Plus, it made wrapping a lot easier because she knew right where everyone's presents were located. There's no doubt that the world hasn't caught on to this concept yet. There's more paper than ever... bank statements, insurance paperwork, schedules, school-related reports, medical records, warranties-- and of course all the fun paper too, like memorabilia, articles, hobby-related stuff and more. This is not to mention all the email messages and computer documents that get printed and copied each day--even more paper! These papers start small, quickly turn into piles, and then grow into mountains. Sometimes, these mountains of paper get so high, that the thought of tackling them is just too overwhelming-- especially when you don't have a good filing system in place or much time to put one together. If you're sick and tired of the piles of paper taking over your home and your life and you just don't know where to start, I have a solution for you. The good news is, this solution won't take hardly any time at all, and the result will be stunning--a filing system that will allow you to dismantle those mountains and find whatever you're looking for in seconds. Visit: http://www.getorganizednow.com/filing.html P.S. I guarantee you'll be able to get all your paper organized, in an efficient, easy-as-pie to set up filing system that will be the envy of all your friends. ============================================ GET ORGANIZED NOW! EVEN IF YOU LOVE SNACKS AND DESSERTS Of course, you want to look and feel your best. Everyone does. But perhaps you're frustrated over the extra pounds you just can't seem to shed--even though you've been on endless diets. If so, stop fretting. My good friend Cate and her husband came up with a simple, workable plan that she and her husband used to shed unwanted pounds without starving or dieting. Cate dropped two dress sizes. Her husband dropped a bunch of pounds too. They did this with three children and full schedules of games and dance classes and all that fun stuff. They LOOK fantastic! Cate told me they FEEL amazing. Her program is called 'Real People Don't Diet' and it's great. Cate is a real person who found a way for a real family to eat and lose, while not grossing out the kids! As she says, 'All you'll need to do is take simple math, apply it to your eating habits and keep on living your life.' That's so do-able. So, if you'd like to stop dieting and start eating, I highly encourage you to check out 'Real People Don't Diet' right now. Because I have so many ideas about what to do, I never really end up starting anything-- too overwhelming. Your challenge this week was like a eureka moment for me. I wrote down just 10 fall projects, and picked 3 to begin working on. I'm almost done with my first 3 and am ready to pick 3 more. This is so much more manageable. Thanks for helping me start getting things done! Melissa Kramer Boise, Idaho ----- I made a list of 10 fall things to do--for my husband! I highlighted the most important 3 on the list. Ok, so it's still organizing if I delegate to him, right? Well, maybe I'll give him a hand so we can get done quicker and do something fun together.
