Do You Ever Talk to Yourself?
Do you ever talk to yourself? I recently ran a web poll on my site
asking this question, which you may have voted in. Here are the results:
56%...All the time...it's how I think
24%...Sometimes. And I often don't even realize it until someone tells me
14%...Nope. My thoughts are only in my head
4%....Only if I'm bordering on a panic attack
2%....I don't talk to myself, but I do talk to my imaginary friends
Although it may seem quirky and even annoying to those folks who have to listen
to us talk to ourselves (I do it all the time), there are actually a lot of
proven benefits to talking to oneself out loud.
You might find yourself talking out loud through a task or challenge.
According to a New York Times article on this subject, 'talking to yourself out
loud in an instructional way can speed up cognitive abilities in relation to
problem-solving and task performance.'
In another article on the subject, in USA Today, Frank Ghinassi, vice president
and director of the Department of Psychology at UPMC's Western Psychiatric
Institute and Clini says, 'Self-talk allows you to run through alternative
scenarios and prepare alternative reactions and strategies.'
That article goes on to say, 'Talking aloud also helps people solve problems.
Chatting to yourself about how you'll answer interview questions for that dream
job, or how you'll handle that serious talk with your boyfriend, prepares you
for the actual experience.'

According to Elite Daily, 'in a study printed in the Quarterly Journal of
Experimental Psychology, psychologists Daniel Swigley and Gary Lupya gave 20
people the name of an object (like a loaf of bread or an apple), which they were
told to find in the supermarket. During the first set of trials, the
participants were bound to silence. In the second set, they repeated the
object's name out loud as they looked for it in the store. According to Live
Science, test subjects found the object with greater ease when they spoke to
themselves while searching. Saying things out loud sparks memory. It solidifies
the end game and makes it tangible.'
You might also find yourself talking out loud to give yourself a motivational
One study published in Procedia - Social and Behavioral Sciences researched the
effects of both motivational and instructional self-talk on subjects playing
basketball. It found that players passed the basketball faster when they
motivated themselves through the task out loud.
For me, I'm always giving myself pep talks...before the exercise classes I
teach...before presentations to big groups of people...before I have to discuss,
with my husband, something big I think we should purchase (smile.)
Talking out loud to yourself can help you organize your thoughts, focuses your
attention, screens out distractions, increases confidence, and helps relieve
In fact, according to Paloma Mari-Beffa, PhD, a senior lecturer of psychology at
Bangor University, 'there's no need to be ashamed of babbling to yourself. In
fact, it might be a sign of higher cognitive functioning.'
That makes me feel great because I've just talked out loud to myself through
this entire article. Plus, next time I'm chatting with myself and someone looks
at me like I've lost it, I can refer them to all this research in defense of
all of us who hold regular conversations with ourselves!

Keeping Tools Organized
We have a small collection of tools in our workbench in the basement, in a
drawer in the kitchen, and on a pegboard in the garage. To keep the tools in
their correct home, we painted a small area on their handles with three
different colored nail polishes to indicate the three different areas. This
keeps the tools organized.
