What I Just Read, and the Power Message in Just One Tiny Paragraph
I love reading books. It's one of my favorite downtime activities. I
read two to three titles a month, purely for entertainment. The book I just
completed was, 'The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry' by Gabrielle Zevin. If you
haven't read it and you enjoy fiction, this is an excellent choice and I
highly recommend it. Here's the scoop...
A.J. Fikry finds himself alone after his beloved wife passes away. He owns a,
once thriving, bookstore that is now dying. He is counting on a rare book that
he'll sell so he can retire comfortably. That book is then stolen. A.J. is going
through an emotional downward spiral.
Just when he thinks these unfortunate events is the beginning of the end, a
mysterious package arrives at his bookstore. It's not his stolen book, but it's
something that gives A.J. the ability to see his life in a new light and start
I'm not going to give away any more because I don't want to spoil it for you,
but I do want to quote a few lines that were on the final pages:
'We aren't the things we collect, acquire, read. We are, for as long as we
are here, only love. The things we loved. The people we loved. And these,
I think these really do live on.'
Think about what you own.
Is every item you have something worth having, meaning it brings you joy, either
emotional joy just in having it OR joy in knowing that it's helping you be more
of something good...like be more productive, attractive, comfortable, or
If it's not, it's physical clutter.
Are you investing your time well, making good memories with family and friends,
allowing yourself time to enjoy different places, and hobbies, working at a
job that's helping you financially and not dragging you down emotionally?
Time that's not well invested is clutter too. No, it's not the type of clutter
that takes the form of a mess on your kitchen table...but it's clutter, it's
messy, and it's one of the major causes of stress, pain, and frustration.
When I read those words from my book last night, they stopped me in my tracks. I
grabbed an index card, copied it word for word, and am displaying it on my
refrigerator. You might want to do the same, because when it comes to power
messages, this is one of them.
For a more meaningful existence during our time here on earth, and for love
that gets passed down after we're gone...
Invest time in others and be good to yourself as well.
Part with 'things' that aren't bringing you joy, and only own things that are
making a positive difference in your life.

Week Beginning June 17th
1. Father's Day. Don't forget to acknowledge the special dads you
know...yours and others. By the way, I looked up holidays for June 18th, and
besides Father's Day, there are a bunch of other 'lesser known' holidays that I
found just hilarious when you consider them together. It is also 'Go Fishing
Day', 'International Picnic Day,' and 'International Sushi Day,' which I suppose
can all be enjoyed in conjunction with Father's Day. That being said, it's also
'International Panic Day' which concerned me because we certainly don't need a
day to celebrate 'panic.' As it turns out, this holiday encourages people
to find ways to reduce and manage their stress. Who picked the name for that
one?! Incidentally, it's also 'National Splurge Day,' which I don't recommend
AND that may certainly be the springboard for panic and the need for stress
2. Make plans for a summer outing. June 21st is the first day of summer
and the perfect time to plan a fun road trip, vacation, or stay-cation, which
will give you something fun to look forward to.
3. Clean and inspect outdoor lighting fixtures. Here's one of those
jobs you probably never do because you rarely think about it, but cleaning
outdoor lighting fixtures is a good TO DO to get done. This includes light
posts, lanterns (near your front door, back door, and/or garage), landscape
and deck lighting, etc. Inspect for any breakage or cracks...and replace
fixtures and/or bulbs as needed.
4. Weed out vegetable beds. If you garden, get those vegetable and/or
plant/flower beds weeded out. I know. Not fun. But has to be done.
5. Identify a time vampire. Look at your schedule. Identify a time
vampire (something that is unnecessary for you to do, or taking way too much
time.) Eliminate that item or streamline it.
My father didn't tell me how to live; he lived, and let me watch him do it.
