NEW Organizing Wisdom and Advice

I Love STUFF, I Won't Toss It...
How Can I Organize It?
So, you have lots of stuff and you're reluctant to toss
it...what can you do?
Everyone has a finite amount of space for their
possessions. At some point the decision has to be made
what's really important, and more importantly, what's not.
Until then...
* * * * * * *
1) Jump outside the box
Whether one focus or many, start by looking at the space
you have. What is present already and how is it being used?
A linen closet can become a pantry for kitchen and
entertaining storage and overflow.
What about the linens, towels, and toiletries that normally
goes in the linen closet? Keep them in the individual
bedrooms and bathrooms. They are right at hand when needed
and may just free up a prime space for clothing accessories
or entertaining items or all things scrapbooking.
Look at all your closets and storage areas and rooms. What
is being used, how is it being used, and could it be used
differently or more efficiently? This is your chance to be
creative and think outside the box.
* * * * * * *
2) Look for storage AND display opportunities
Every room in a house offers opportunities for increased
storage and display areas. Coffee tables can have baskets
slipped underneath. A front hall bench with storage in the
seat could be used for your sewing basket and projects.
Look around. What is on top of your refrigerator or your
kitchen cupboards? Would the length of wall in the hallway
serve for a bookcase or shelving unit to display treasures?
Does the wall going up the stairs cry out for your exhibit
of collected watercolors or cherished family heirloom
quilts?
Is the space above the shelf in the coat closet wasted? A
very inexpensive shelf can add a whole second layer for out
of season items or seasonal cookbooks or hobby overflow.
What about glass shelves in front of a window? One window
could hold an herb garden in the dead of winter while
another could allow figurines to catch the light.
* * * * * * *
3) Think multi-purpose
Does your mirror serve two purposes? Like a medicine
cabinet, many household mirrors can now be opened or
swiveled around to reveal storage for jewelry or scarves
or anything else that you want handy access to that can be
stored on a hook.
A television stand can be a dresser with drawers and
ottomans can have hinged tops so items can be stored
inside.
If you need to replace something in the house or you are
redecorating, always, always ask the question; is there
storage or display potential here?
* * * * * * *
4) Wander aisles and search shops
There are so many stores that focus on storage and
household items, often at discounted prices. There are
also so many charity and consignment shops that offer a
glimpse of what is out there that is unique and versatile.
Get in the habit of ‘window shopping’ in various stores,
particularly ones you don't often frequent. It is amazing
what’s out there and collecting ideas for potential storage
solutions prepares you to make efficient and ideally cost
effective purchases if and when the need arises.
The other benefit of browsing is it provides potential DIY
projects. If you are the least bit handy or creative (or
have friends or family who are) an idea at the store could
just be an easy and inexpensive weekend project that can be
custom made exactly for your home and need. I know a family
who bought an old diaper changing table for pennies on the
dollar at a flea market, and transformed it into a lovely
cabinet to hold toys and games.
* * * * * * *
5) Rotate
Some people have one collection or many that would
overwhelm any living space if all was displayed at the
same time. In these cases, the process of rotating what is
displayed or used may be the best alternative.
You may may rotate paintings or sculptures or other pieces
of art so that their home in spring and summer provides a
different experience from fall and winter. In climates
where winter takes a serious hold, crafting may take center
stage during the cold months to be put away in favor of all
things gardening, or scrapbooking may make room for
painting the great outdoors.
When one half of a collection is being admired or one
passion is being indulged, the other can be safely stored
to be enjoyed at another time.
